K2 headed out on Tuesday afternoon for a mullet session in Belfast Lough. I was working and so I couldn’t go with him AGAIN!
He has fished this location a few times this year already but not that often because up to now the fishing has been quite slow to come on with only small numbers of fish showing each time he has been there to have a look. So he just decided to go and suss it out again during the week to see how things stood now and with the water temperature rising slowly but surely he was confident that there would be more fish present compared to what there has been over the past few weeks or so.
On arrival he was happy to see that conditions where almost perfect for fishing with virtually no wind at all.
He fished for a couple of hours from the middle of the tide up to high. This is the stage of tide from fishing this particular mark in the past when he has found that the fish are present and feed in greater numbers. As the tide rises/floods the fish get pushed in with it further towards the shore bringing them closer to you meaning that you don't have to wade out as far to reach them which is good.
Again, using the same set-up of a float trace with bread as bait he got his gear on and his rod ready and waded out from the shore into the water, walking out into deeper water once in and began to look about to see if he could spot any fish present or breaking the surface.
He spotted a few fish quite quickly not too far in the distance in front of him and so he began throwing small pieces of bread out to entice them closer over to him so as to get them within casting distance of where he was standing.
After a while he had a good number of fish feeding in front of him and around him and about half way through the session and after getting a good lot of bites he finally got his fish which just buried his float down under the water hard as it took his bread that was on the hook. And so the fight was on!
The fish scrapped well and so he played it carefully, ensuring he wasn’t bullying it or pulling it too hard in the first few minutes of the fight because if you do that with mullet you are more than likely just going to end up losing it completely which would not be good. After approx. 4 minutes or so he landed his fish safely onto the shore.
He took a quick photograph of it and released it back in and it swam off back out to sea.
He continued fishing on for about another hour and then he just called it a day and headed for home. Another enjoyable session was had with the weather staying nice for him the whole time which was great.
