Dalkey Rocks strange catch!!

#1 Post by Tommy B »

People:Just me

Duration:11am-3pm

Tide:Low

Weather:Sunny slight breeze

Bait:Mackeral
Rigs:Feathers

Results:9 Macs, 2 Dogfish, 2 Codling, and a Starfish??

Report:
Having read reports of Mackeral being caught in South Dublin I decided to head down to Dalkey for a mack bash. After a few cast I had the diner with 3 small ones. It went a bit quiet so I baited up the feathers with one of the macs and pulled in 2 Dogfish and a very small codling. I then started using just the feathers (no bait) and caught four large macs together and a few singles. Then I caught a Codling of about .75lb on feathers only, never did that before? My next catch was the strangest!! I cast out and left them out to see what would happen and I pulled in this Starfish. It was the most unusual one I've seen and a PB :) Nice looking creature so I thought I'd do a report.
P.S had the mac for diner I had forgotten how good they taste fresh, delicious!!!

I've caught loads of starfish but they always only have 4 or 5 legs. But that one is a strange lookin creature. Fair play. I've only ever caught one codling on plain feathers too. Nice surprise when it happens though.

Isn't it a common sunstar? I thought they were distributed all round Ireland and the UK? I know rarer further south, but if you search the net you find them in surveys from Ireland. See the 2 links below for example. Pretty sure I saw one diving off Connemara a few years ago, although most I would have seen diving in Scotland.

Probably still worth reporting though?

ok i was told you do not find them in warm inshore water only off shore in deep cold water
but looks like my information was wrong and that they do turn up on Irish beaches

Lol - We're all only as good as the info we've been given. You can see by the links that I spent a little while double checking what I thought I knew.

No way don't like the colours :D :D
I wonder where they are all coming from?
I was down sorrento today and there was about six people in a dinghy chasing
a jellyfish up and down the sound with a tracking device.
Wonder what thats gonna tell them??
