wicklow- 17/07/2010

#1 Post by cw1 »

Who: me

Time: 19.30 - 21.30

Weather: Cloudy + windy

Tide: Out (I think)

Rig: Two hook flapper

Bait: Rag + Hard back crab

Result: 1 small flounder + 2 smooth Hounds

After a day's DIY some therapy was required.... Got down to the beach and there seemed to be a fait bit of weed about. Was fishing at distance (can never tell how far, but I belted it out as far as I could). First cast resulted in a smaall flounder. All quiet for about a while after and then there was a small quiver on the rod tip, thought maybe crabs, reeled in and to my surpise had caught a pup smoothhound. No a real fight, but a first, so happy days. Quickly unhooked and back in the water.

Casted out again and was in the middle of setting up a second rod when wham, the first rod keeled over and the drag started singing!!! A few expletives  , and I quickly struck in. Solid fish on and my nerves where flying. Three or four cracking runs and eventuaally got him close to shore (please don't come off, please dont come off), eventually had him in the suds and it was another smoothound :D. Didn't measure/weigh him but I reckon he was maybe 3 or 4 lbs? Took a quick snap and quickly returned. Thanks to the other anglers who took the pic for me!!

Cheers lads, I was delighted! Smoothhounds - ''do exactly what it says on the tin'', their reputation is well deserved :D
Yeah not sure what it weighed, quite long, but fairly bulky at the head. Think it was a male fish? Yep, all fish were caught on rag, off the top snood. Only used one crab, without a nibble! The remainder were put back in the water.
