holly joe, reen pier, 3/7/2010

#1 Post by jw »

People: john, pat, alby, boycie, the austrian and jw

Duration: 0830-1900

Tide: neap

Weather: light wind, 1 meter swell, nothing like the forecast

Bait: mackerel

Rigs: flowing traces shads muppets pirks

Results: pollack cod ling haddock pout ballan cuckoo

Report: it is believed that the wrecks in this area have been
overfished commercially due to the calm weather this winter and now
hold large shoals of small whiting with the attendant blue sharks
snapping at their heels so it was decided to fish some reefs in shallower
water on the day

Hi jw,
I'm very interested in what you stated above. Did anyone actually encountered some sharks there?

Yes Tommy, I was hauling up a decent Pollock and in about 20m depth the downward fighting fish must have tempted a (possible Blue) Shark, 2 sharp thumps then bang, nothing, no weight, everything, the full trace apart from the first hook and the fish were missing. John tried immediately with a full Mackerel but with a mouthful of tackle he must have lost the appetite for more of these adventures
