12hrs mullet madness

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:Me and Ronald

Duration:all day

Tide:in out in out

Weather:Breezy SW wind

Bait:bread,sweetcorn

Rigs:floats

Results:9 mullet 8)

Report:This was one of my best days mullet fishing in a while. We fished 4 marks,2 new marks,1 newish and 1 old.

The first mark was a new mark only found this year but that has produced good numbers of fish for all of us lately using sweetcorn..
We arrived at 5:30am and were fishing by 5:50am.Lots of fish moving straight away and it wasn`t long before Ronald missed the first fish.I could only watch as he had all the action in his swim :( then he stopped messing around and landed a nice mullet of 4lb.A quick photo and it went back safely.
It was finally my turn for some action now that ronald had scared all his fish my way.
No missed bites for me,i was straight into a fish on the first cast which was in the net far too quickly for my liking. This weighed in at 3.9lb but fought like it was 1lb. :(
A few more missed bites for Ronald and the fish were gone.Time for the second mark....

Mark 2 was brand new.I found it last week but this was the first time we fished it.Bread was our chosen bait for this mark but it took over an hour to get any interest.
Ronald again had the first bite, which he MISSED  .Then it was my turn and i also, ahem! missed it!!
It went nuts for a while with missed bites all round until finally Ronald had a proper bite and a good hook hold. This fish seemed much bigger than the 4lb`er he had earlier and put up a cracking fight.10 minutes later i slid the net under it but it wasn`t as big as we thought and weighed in at 4.75lb.Still a very nice fish. 8)
Ronald was in to another fish 5 mins after that and landed another fat fish of 4.1lb...
It wasn`t looking good for me as the tide was well on the drop and most of the fish had fecked off. We reconed we had 10 more mins at most before we had to leave when i spotted a fish beside a patch of weed taking a piece of bread.I cast over and let the wind blow my bait into its path, then wham, fight on
Another really hard fighting fish was in the net after 10 mins This came in at 4.5lb :D
Time to move after that.

After some lunch it was time for Mark 3 which was another brand new mark we had found while out for sea trout 5 weeks ago.
Not as much to report here. Loads of fish and one fish was 7lb+ but very few fish were seen taking bread.I managed to get one small mullet of 3lb but that was it for here.
We stayed here as long as possible before we had to head to mark 4.
I`ll def be back at that mark and hopefully get the big one feeding

Mark 4 was the well known mark at Comber behind the garage.Good numbers have been caught here for the past 2 weeks so it was worth a go :)
We arrived 1.5-2hrs before high tide and the mullet were just starting to move around the corner to the back of the garage.
There was alot a people already fishing on every stretch of the river up to the bridge and we were too late to get the best spot at the corner where it heads to the wee yacht club so we fished 50yards upstream instead.
There was alot of fish around but it took a while to get a bite.Ronald was into the first fish just before high tide.I walked up to see if he needed a hand but it was already in the net.His first fish below 4lb today and came in at 3.7lb. :D
I had two young lads fishing beside me but they didn`t know much about fishing so i showed them how we fished Comber and gave them some of my bread to try.Good deed for the day 8)
It was almost high tide when i had some action but after a few mins it was lost  looked a good fish but it was my own fault cos i lost it while setting my net up
I was finally rewarded for my good deed with a mullet of 3.2lb.
4 fish each and Ronald had to go Now was my chance to get one up for the first time.
Not great after that. All the fish swam past without stopping and gathered at the good corner
as usual..
But i had an idea and headed downstream from that corner and waited for a group to approach then cast infront of them.First cast and i had my 5th fish of the day :D it only tipped the scales to 3.3lb but i was well chuffed.Lost one more fish before they vanished out of sight.
For anyone wanting thier first mullet this is one of the easiest marks to get one,and can be really good fun.
The best spot is def the corner before it turns towards the yacht club but anywhere along that stretch behind the garage will produce fish.Get there early as it can get busy.

Anyway time for a kip.Had a great day and the best part about it was the fact that i only had to wear my waders a one of the four marks which is unusual with mullet fishing..

Was a long ol session but great craic, just a pity I had to bugger of early from comber due to other commitments  had a nice wee pod of fish feeding in front of me as well, it makes a change having a handy mark or 2 that you dont need waders for, especially in this heat 8)
All the walkin/driving/chart work/os maps, around the shore has paid of with the new marks, it goes to show a bit of research goes a long way but bloody hard work.
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

Nice fishing guys.

What makes a good mullet mark?

One with lots of fish or one where they feed?
Species List 2012 (Me) - Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Plaice, Codling, pollack, dab, SS Scorpion Fish, Ballan Wrasse, Codling.

Species List 2012 (Daniel) - Not got started yet :-(

Alright mate how`s it going..
Both make a good mullet spot.Three of my fav marks only hold 10-12 fish but on a good day you can get 2-3 of them.
Most of the other marks will have hundreds if not thousands of mullet but you might only get 1-2 fish on a good day
Some marks, like Comber, will have hundreds passing through a narrow channel.Which for me is the easiest method for mullet,it`s just not always easy to get them feeding

Other places like Kinnegar will need a bit more thought, and you`ll need to wade about looking for the fish but without spooking them and get into the best postion to fish without them knowing you are there..

My personal fav would be the marks where you pick out 1 or 2 fish and trot the bread down to them.Very rewarding when you finally get one in the net

Anywhere the mullet are feeding then i`ll fish it

Al I think i have managed to step back from the edge of the mullet abyss  .I am now fishing for other species and have seemed to come through the mullet obsession with no ill effects.
Well maybe a few.
Dont get sucked in mate.
As a mate said the other week "Lifes too short to be fishing for mullet or dancing with ugly girls."

Classic.

I'm sure the air was blue, what fly were you using, the wee bread fly or your secret mullet fly?
