Hi,
Well, decided to have a foray into our other area of interest , the saltees, and around Kilmore Quay. The forecast was good, but when we set out at the ungodly hour of 6 am the sea still had a good lump in it. Firstly we headed to Hook head to try and get some fresh bait, and as we had already heard macks were getting hard to find on the s/e at present. This was true to form and after a good hour of trying, we just had three and one launce!
Decided it was enough and off we set for a bit of bassing, on arrival at the mark the conditions were perfect, but after a good few drifts, it was obvious billy was not in the mood for the methods we were using, plus there was a LOT of weed in the water, this was to prove very troublesome for the whole day, another vain attempt was made to catch macks, but all we kept getting was small codling, or Pollock!, ( not a bad complaint I hear people say.) There was more around in jan and feb!!
Next we decided to deal with seirts Pollock itch, and boated some nice Pollock to about 5lb, and a good few codling to 3lbs, a move was decide on to go and try a few new marks for flats, on arrival at the chosen ground the drift was set and it was not long before we picked up a nice plaice, and then I had a very aggressive take, it turned out to be a nice smoothound in less than 15 foot of water, well happy, this was repeated over a couple of drifts with some nice smoothies coming onboard. We decided to anchor in slightly deeper water, to try for some rays, and to our delight first drop produced a nice spotted ray for me, this was followed by a frenetic 30 mins of fishing, with Bullhuss to 9lbs, thornback ray , large dabs, LSD, and more smoothies coming to the boat, this mark certainly is etched in the GPS!! As it was an experiment day, it was hard to pull out of that spot , but we had to try new marks, so off to another reef for a minis bash, Again we had a ball, with 9 species in just 30 mins! Tompot blenney, Rock cook, corkwing, goldsinney, and ballan wrasse, Pollock, poor cod, codling, coalfish. With the water so clear it was noticed that each time we realeased a fish some very large Pollock were coming from below and snaffling an easy meal!!! This would not do we said, and the next pood cod was freelined behind the boat, bang, a cracking fight ensued on a light rod, and soon a nice 9lb Pollock was on the deck, plus a few more of his mates to follow, With a set of polaroids on this was real visual fishing!
By now we had touched the 22 species mark, and we headed off for a drift on our final mark where we added a couple more to end the day on 24 species, a PB for siert and myself, so we were very happy with the day.
