my first bass!

#1 Post by Fishless »

Caught my first Bass yesterday on Banna Strand and im delighted...

Rig: 3-hook flapper, Bait: sandeel / peeler crab. time 20:00-22:00.

Im pretty new to shorefishing, i used to do some spinning for mackeral etc but nothing major. i recently moved to Tralee and being close to the coast ive taken up fishing in a big way. Over the past 2 or 3 months ive been trying a few differant places but not much luck. I seemed to be getting more dog fish and spider crab than anything!

I caught this fella after about an hour, think i could have got a few more bits after but didnt land anymore fish. It was taken on sandeel...ive tried peelar crab a good bit over the last few weeks but nothing caught on it yet...i generally just cut the crab in half with a scissors, hook it and wrap alot of bait elastic around...could i be doing something wrong? any advice on that lads? also i havent used lug yet as i havent had time to collect them...im wondering if they could be a beter bait or should oi stick to sandeel?

the fish was a bit on the small side so he was returned alive and well ... although id love to bring home a big one some day...as for now its great to get off the mark.

good clip on here for presenting peeler crab: http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Sea-Angler/S ... LER-CRABS/

Lug is definitely worth trying either plain or tipped with slivers of mack or squid.... experiment with different baits razor etc to see what works best at different venues.... tight lines.

Oh and congrats on your first Bass 8)

Congratulations on catching your first bass, I hope it's the first of many for you :D
On the subject of bait, I fish down around the Co.Kerry coast quite alot each year and I haven't found peeler crab to be that good of a bait for bass compared to others I have used although you will still catch on them. The baits I use and that I would reccommend to you from having caught alot bass from using them myself is both fresh lugworm and razorfish. These two baits will out fish any other over the whole season in my opinion and they are great for bass all year around. Sandeel are good in the summer months when they are about in good numbers and when the bass are feeding on them.
You have many places down there where you can dig lugworm and collect razorfish so if you take the time and effort to collect them not only will you save yourself money but your hard work will be rewarded as you will find that you will start catching more bass. Good luck.

Thanks for the advise guys...i bought 24 peelar crab in Cork a few weeks ago for E20 and the guy in the shop swore blind that they were the best bait for bass but i ive used maybe 18 of them now and nothing caught on them...i

ill have to get out the shovel and dig some lug so...im curious about the razorfish. Ive never used them for bait, ive seen frozen ones in the bait shop are they any good (i presume that fresh ones are better)...is there any secret to collecting them?

Also once i have them, is it then just a case of breaking the shell, taking out the flesh and hooking it?......

i can second what kerry says, razor and lug combined or on their own have always outfished crab for me by miles.for bass crab comes way down the list imho, after lug, rag, razor, gaper.its a hugely overated and massively overpriced bait. :)
