Co. Sligo Specimen Wrasse Hunt June 17th 2010

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People:Day 1 & 2 Myself, Day 3 Myself & the Girlfriend

Duration:Day one & two, Twenty minutes each session, Day three, 3 Hours

Tide:Stranding

Weather: Very sunny & Breezy

Bait: Spinner, Limpet & Lug

Rigs: Single hook & Weight

Results: Day one: 2 Mackerel, 1 Wrasse, Day two: 2 Mackerel, 2 Wrasse, Day three: 4 Wrasse

Report:

Was dying to get out & try for a specimen Wrasse after getting a few small ones during the past couple of weeks & few good Mackerel. But due to rough sea, & tons of floating weed it was very hard to get the right conditions  , but luckily Thursday looked good apart from it been very bright but said we’d give it a lash.

So quick stop along the way, dug some good size Lug, & made our way to the Wrasse mark and after a quick sandwich was baited up. The water was crystal clear & from the off was into some decent bites, landed the first wrasse of 2.5lb followed by a slightly smaller one. But the wind had changed & started to get fairly breezy causing swells to form making it tough to keep the bait in the right place which meant loosing alot of weights & hooks in the kelp  .

Decided to move up to a gully where there was a bit of shelter, which has been good in the past few years for big Wrasse. Baited up with lug, dropped down along the rock edge, a few minutes later got a great bite, I struck quick & was in battle with a very large wrasse, which gave a mighty scrap almost burying itself to the kelp, but with a bit of luck got her landed safely although the hook popped out just as I lifted her in  , quick few photos was delighted to see her tip the scales at 6lb 3oz a new personal best Wrasse happy days!! 8) Back she went to fight another day, gave it another ten minutes & landed another one of 2lb.
