Boat engine stolen - Donegal

#1 Post by anthony2carr »

Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I have just heard that my sister-in-laws fathers engine was stolen off the back of his boat. The boat was in a small fishing villiage in West-Donegal. He has been fishing the area all his life, never having any trouble with his boat. For someone to steal his engine, not 100 feet from his house, at the start of his fishing season. Well it's pretty sickening.

Can anyone point me to a place where I could inform other boaters that may be offered the same engine?????

Shocking and sickening. You might let the lads over on Boat Angling Ireland know about it.

Do you know the make, model, serial number or any distinguishing marks on it?

It's probably destined for overseas.

Cheers Tanglerat.

It probably is destined for overseas. But on the chance that someone is offered it, would be nice to stop these people.

I'll find out more details about the engine and let them know at BAI.

Same thing happened to my grandad 2 weeks ago, mariner 30hp engine was cut off the back of his orkney520 from the corrib boat club in galway.
Now not only has he to get a new engine but he had to get the whole boat rewired and the powersteering done too.
Makes me sick...some real a***oles out there

Cut off how? Heard of a case a couple of years back where neanderthals chainsawed the transom off a boat to get the engine

Herself thinks I'm paranoid but I keep the boat/trailer and the engine chained to a steel pillar in the hayshed, which itself is in a locked yard. You can never have too much security especially in a recession.

Its a fair probability an engine taken in Donegal would end up over the Border, so maybe alert the authorities there.

Lads! I appreciate that the blame for the majority of engine theft seems to be laid on the door of thieves from Eastern Europe. It is terrible that the Gardai/Customs are not more proactive. I have not heard of a seizure of stolen goods being smuggled out of the country yet we are all being told they are destined for those markets.

Either way we cannot have a thread like this descend into a bashing session for our esteemed visitors!

Bottom line here is that all boat owners must be more vigilant. It is a shame to see the fabric of our society being torn apart – there was a time were your boat and gear were sacred and would be untouched but minded by your fellow boaters – still times change and we must all get wise to it. Mind your gear and that of your neighbour!
