Wonderful Wexford Weekend

#1 Post by dfella25 »

People: Just me mostly

Duration: Two sessions but quickies

Tide: Dunno it's Wexford so I never know

Weather: Beautiful. Never mind waders I was in shorts

Bait:Rag and some crab

Rigs: Two hook paters 2's and 1's and up and overs with 2/0 and 1/0 pennel

Results: First Smut of 2010

Report:After spending last week in Wexford the opportunity came the dfella family to take another weekend down there. So we packed up and headed down. Only this time I’d packed my rods! I’d blanked during the week so I wanted to wet a line and just flattie bash to get my mojo back. I headed down to the beach on Friday with my 3 year old in tow. Quick session and four flounder later the job was done. Daddy was superman and a hero. 8)

Saturday evening and I was given clearance from the fisheries control officer to head off for an hour. I gathered my gear and a couple of frozen crabs I’d bummed off an other lad and down I went. Got down and set up with a flattie trace at my feet and I lobed out a crab. Things were slower but a few cats later the flats were in, in force. While pulling in flounder after flounder the rod at distance was idle. With three crabs left I stuck two onto the pennel rig and lashed it out the best I could. Then my rod rod got a bite that was different then a flounder bite. Thinking it could be a schoolie I reeled in dreading a slap on the wrist for being a bold boy! To my horror it was worse, an eel. The wee man had managed to wrecked my trace and deeply hook himself while at it. I struggled with him foe what seemed like ages trying to free the hook. I had slim on my face, arms and legs but managed to get the hook out and see him off. I hadn’t even cleaned off when the other rod went bang and I started to reel in what I knew could only be a smoothie. Not a monster but gave a good account of himself gave me a good fight. I beached him and was unhooking him when a couple came over to have a look. They took a pic for me and I popped the fish back in and watched in awe as he swam around for a bit before heading out.

After that I knew I was done and had been out for three hours. I packed up and ran home to show off my pic and drink a few bottles of wine with herself. It tasted sweet! :D

Nice one Conor, thats a pretty decent smut compared to the pups i've been getting lately.Think i'll do a report with my little ones though, just to keep things balanced. Would be nice though to get a decent scrap like you got. Those eels are right messy feckers

Nicely done. Spent about 7 hours Sat night looking for a smoothie myself without even one bite. Good work on the eel. Haven't seen one in a long long time.

Thanks lads. The beard is for support for Rafa. However under orders it was removed last night  Mark the pic was a fluke, I had a clothe over his head while removing the hook to try and cool him down! And John when it comes to vino we would have problem polishing off a few bottles. Especially when you find 3 for €15 that are gorgeous!

I wasn't sure myself Rodger. I'd seen them used as tope bait on telly but thought the better of it
Thanks for the replys lads. Tony I know my politics are extreme but I've not been branded a terrorist yet. Maybe if I keep drinking value wine I might find myself in trouble!
