Long Rod - Century Carbon Metal SRE

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Long Rod - Century Carbon Metal SRE

#1 Post by ronanohal »

Got one of these last year to help with my casting and maybe do some long range fishing for smoothies. I've been putting it through it's paces a bit and really like it now.
At first I found it fairly cumbersome - it's 5m, nearly 17ft and a lot heavier than rods like the greys bze that i was used to. First few sessions with it I was expecting the extra length to add miles to my casts but it wasn't so easy. It took a bit of practice and trial and error but I've found now that a slow fishing pendulum with a huge drop really launches a small crab bait and 130g lead out a long long way....most of the time - my fault, not the rod's.
The tip is great for registering bites at range too and the whole thing feels very balanced with a shimano ultegra 5500.
I'm thinking of going down to maybe 10lb line or 30lb braid with it to target smoothies and maybe bream this summer.
I don't think this rod is ever going to be a tournament rod but it's definitely a really nice fishing rod. Clean beaches only though i'd say.
Expensive but quality.

i have a 5 metere sre and i would say your 100% right in your opinion of the rod.its is a bit heavy and takes a while to get used to the length and the softish tip when casting, but a nice rod to fish with alright.i have seen photos of fish over 30lb being landed on them in namibia.well done on the report of the rod.

I bought an SRE blank (the shorter one) and I'm building it now with Fuji BLCAG guides (low riders). Did some test casting with 20lb fireline and casts great, very thin tip as well. I was overhead casting about 130-140 metres consistently with 4-5oz. Think it will be perfect for my kind of fishing here.

Already looking forward to the sole sessions with it this summer 8)

I had one for a while thought it wasnt bad but it didnt suit my casating style, there are better long rods out there for example the penn affinity and the grauvell dh also the new tubertini shore range are all better imo.
