Litter left behind by anglers

I have taken up sea angling again since i moved back home i have never ever ever seen so much cr*p left behind by so called anglers,bait,rig wrappers,crisp packets and even fish they have caught,killed and then just left to rot on the rocks this was all on the Pans rocks near Ballycastle im disgusted!!!!!!!

Its rough alright. i do go up to Howth at the cliffs a couple of times during the summer to the uncle. Its terrible.

Had to give up on howth beer cans, line and tackle robbing muppets.

Drives me mad to see all the crap people leave behind.
It only takes a few minutes if you clean as you.
Just imagine what there houses are like.

I see one lad in clare fillet about 30 macks on top of a cliff and leave all the heads tails and guts sitting on the ground about 1 meter from the edge. Knacker.

yeah folks what the hell is wrong with people? i cannot understand the mindless muppets that leave all their crap behind them. i just wish these idiots realise they give us all a bad name. i was with a group of beginners in beautiful kells bay yesterday and was horrified by the angling litter left behind. if i was a tourist i would never again return to the country. scenery beautiful but litter appalling

Its the same inland. I like to fish at blessinton lake. Camp. And each time I arrive, I have to spent time cleaning up after the fishermen from the weekend before. bait wrappers and beer tins.

My wife and I were at Kinnegoe on Lough Neagh one day last year and she spotted a pile of discarded line. When she mentioned it to an angler sitting near by he said it got all tangled up and he had to throw it away! The missus gathered it up, rolled it in a ball and handed it to him. Told him to take it home and burn it, not leave it there for a bird to get tangled up in and die. You should have seen his face! I think 1. He'd never thought of that. 2. Nobody ever pulled him up before. 3. He couldn't believe a woman knew anything like that.

This isn't just an angling problem its a problem for the whole country.
every country road is being dumped on too.

there needs to be re education and some facilities a few bins would help a lot.

In general the whole country is swamped by litter. We need to get a grip before all tourism is gone and all thats left are the litter louts

yes there is a problem with people not taking their rubbish home..
and it would take more than re-education to help stop it.

but one solution that could help is if the corporation had bins by or even near the beaches, because lets face it its not just anglers who use beaches.. how many times have you cone fishing and found many disposable BBQ's lying about the place??

i know some rock marks do also get messed up, but thee corporation should look into where is a popular place for fishing and supply at least one bin (and also empty it on a regular basis), but i know they will start spouting on about budget costs and the likes.. so it's actually a no win situation.. but if a bin (even an oil drum: empty of course) was placed so those that haven't a clue on how to dispose of litter have somewhere they can put their rubbish..

I agree with steve more bins are needed but its up to general angling population to leave the beaches with what they came with the word has too be pasted around.

I'm not so sure about bins. If you are in the countryside it should be YOUR responsibility to bring rubbish home.

People talk a lot about their personal civic rights in this country, unfortunately a lot less about their civic responsibilities.

Steve and JD make good points, civic responsibility is a prerequisite to solving this problem, as are strategically placed bins. However our county councils will not put bins in key areas such as roadside laybyes because they will have to pay to have them regularly serviced and emptied.

I live on a hillside backroad in south county Wicklow which is used as a short cut by vehicles and you want to see the litter that they chuck out the window, we are always picking up litter outside our house. Lucazade bottles, Red Bull cans, chipper material (the nearest one is ten minutes away), being the main protagonists.

I was on Clogga Point the other day and found empty squid boxes, shamrock lure wrappers, drink bottles, and other rubbish left by so called responsible anglers.

Keep flying the flag on this one. Would the members of Sea Angling Ireland be interested in highlighting this blight to the Minister for the Environment in a signed statement asking for civic mindedness to be raised at County Council and National level forthwith?

I was in Bray Harbour the other evening and the amount of rubbish left around was sickening. It was embarassing for me as an angler as I could see the reaction of people who were walking on the pier and I felt as if I had to explain that it wasnt me . The Councils wont put bins in place as the policy now is to encourage people to bring their rubbish home with them as opposed to bringing their rubbish out with them to place in a bin provided by the council . When I asked for bins to be provided at the car park in the Park where I work, I was told that "Bins attract rubbish" .From personal experience of emptying bins I know that if you provide a bin it will be filled up in no time, people will bring bags of household rubbish and place it beside the bins if they wont fit in. This would lead me to think that unfortunately there would be even more rubbish left at these spots. Maybe more signs warning people of the consequences of being caught littering,,,,,,,,,,or even better,maybe actually fining someone for littering . The kids today are taught more in school about littering but sadly i've often observed kids coming out of the shops and dropping papers on the ground right beside bins. I think there needs to be a huge campaign like the drink driving one to make littering socially unacceptable,,,,,,,as a wise old Council worker told me about litter when I started ,,"You'll pick it up as you go along"

In countries like Austria, Germany and Switzerland household bins and waste separation is compulsory. Public bins are provided everywhere free of charge from the local communities and littering laws are in place and enforced. Result: no litter! People can learn very fast when it costs them!

its simple, if its anglers leaving the stuff behind, they have to take it onto the venue in a bag or something in the first place, how hard can it be to use the bag to take it home as well.... but trying to get this through often doesnt work.
ive overheard some saying they dont want the smell of used bait packets etc in their car on the way home....
any anglers coming across problems of litter on venues in ulster please let me know via pm
