More mullet caught from the Co.Down Coast - June 2010.

#1 Post by KERRY1 »

Date: Monday 7th June 2010.

People: Myself and K2

Duration: 2 hours and 15 minutes approx.

Tide: Mid tide up to high

Bait: Bread

Method used: Float set-up

Weather: Cloudy, warm with light wind and rain

Results: 1 thick lipped mullet for K2

Report:

After getting his account opened up at home last week K2 decided to go out for another session at the mullet last night.

With the weather forecast for the rest of the week not looking too good he wanted to make the most of any opportunity he had when the weather was still reasonably nice.
With the tide abit later last night, it meant that I was able to go with him this time and so he picked me up from work and we headed to the mark.

On arrival we were pleased to see that conditions where almost perfect for fishing with virtually no wind at all.

I didn’t have my gear with me as I was collected straight from work and so I didn’t fish. Instead I just spectator for the night, standing at the water’s edge encouraging him on to catch something and keeping him topped up with bread when he ran out.
K2 fished for approx a couple of hours or so from the middle of the tide up to high as this is when we have found from fishing here alot last year that the fish are present and feed in greater numbers.

Again, using the same set-up of a float trace with bread as bait once he got his gear on and rod ready K2 waded out into deeper water to have a scan about to see if there was any fish about.

Just like last week when he caught one, there was only a few small groups of fish showing but that was all he needed and so he began throwing small pieces of bread out to entice them over closer to him, so that they were within casting distance from him.

After about an hour of fishing, he finally got his fish which at first just seemed to nudge his float before it buried underneath the water – and the fight was on!
He took it gently, allowing the fish to run abit so as not to lose the fish which can so easily happen with mullet sometimes, and after approx. 3 minutes or so (which felt to us alot longer) K2 landed his fish safely.
I took a quick photograph of it and it was released back in to freedom

K2 continued to fish for about another hour or so and then we called it quits as there were not as many fish to target and showing at this stage as there where when we initially arrived which wasn’t that many in the first place.
We left for home feeling chuffed that he had caught another one. A good night was had with a fish caught and the weather staying nice apart from some light rain which became consistent at the end.

We truly are hooked on this mullet fishing now, even worse than we were before if that is possible.
Roll on our next session, hopefully our good luck and fortune continues.

Below is a picture of K2’s mullet he caught for you to look at if you wish.

 It's slaps all round then on your advice!
On the subject of what way we fish with our bread, we use both methods depending on whether the fish are feeding on the surface or underneath. Once you've sussed out what their feeding habits are on the day you are fishing for them then you choose between one or the other or try both and see what works best for you.

Cheers mate, you’ll have to get out with us when you come back from your holiday for a go at them, have a great time and I hope you catch loads of fish. But, I told you - if you manage to catch a stingray before me I will fall out with you! Ha! Ha!

Jesus Al  by the looks of your species list a mullet is the only thing you have left to catch!!  Don’t worry, you and Jordan will get one this year, fingers crossed.

Thanks Stefwest. I’m glad we went out when we did the other night because the weather here is horrible now just like the forecast said it would be.
