People:myself and herself

Duration:weekend

Tide:all over the place

Weather:clear and calm

Bait:lug mack squid crab

Rigs:various

Results: dogs dabs starry's and tub gurnard

Report:woke up Saturday morning and the two of us had no plans.. i mentioned a session that was going to be happening in Donegal, but that wasn't greeted as well as i planned :? so thinking cap back on, where to fish that's not too far???
over breakfast i checked the site and had a quick look through the reports section, and just as i finished i got a txt from someone saying the smuts are starting to appear on a beach..
mentioned to herself and she didn't seem to say no, so the trip east was on.. a quick call to saltydog to see did he want to head over with us, found that he was already over there..
rods packed and sleeping bags packed just as it started to rain in Galway we left for the east coast, it got brighter and dryer the further we travelled from Galway..
managed to hit courtown in good time, and a pop into the lads in the angling centre (never a quick chat with them), bait acquired and story's of tope and smuts filled the air..
the first session was just down to the pier to see if i could pick up a tub gurnard or two and to see if herself could get a few more species to her list.. fished with the spinning rods an 2oz leads, bites were slow but i achieved my first objective, a nice little tub gurnard, soon followed by a good sized dab, then picked up a couple of doggies.. the light was beginning to fade and I didn't want to hit the next mark in total darkness so quickly packed up and headed over..
arrived at the second mark with just enough light to set up and get a cast out.. as I set up the second rod for herself she went and got the ground sheet so she could lie on the sand :? after a while i could hear a noise that made me laugh.. she fell asleep and started to snore her lid off..   thankfully that didnt last or a frozen crab would have been put to use
still asleep, the rod i set up for her gave a nice bang and then slack line.. i shouted for her to get up but no reaction, so i had to strike and reel in the fish, while all the time trying to wake her.. fish landed and a nice one too unhooked and walked over to where she was asleep and a nudge with my foot, that woke her up.. tried to get a good photo, but left my good camera behind (as well as my filleting knife   ) and got her to release the fish.. 5lbs starry meant second objective achieved for me, the fishing went quiet for the night and a few pics of the moon were taken to fight the boredom, tiredness started to kick in so packed up and back to the car (for the night)
woke up with a hunger like you couldn't believe, but at 6am i couldn't think of anywhere that would be open, so after spending an hour planning the days events we went to Gorey to see if anywhere was open, and found tesco's were open at 7am.. brekkie acquired papers read it was back to courtown, then popped back into courtown angling centre, for a good long chat with Joe and pick up a few bits and pieces, an hour passed and it was time to pay for them bits and pieces and hit the pier for a few more species (if we could get them), set up on the opposite pier from the day before and back out with the 2oz leads on the spinning rods.. bites were few and far between, and i hooked a fish.. so i passed the rod over to herself and said 'reel that in'.. a nice dab came in and her blank for the weekend was saved.. then a few tinsel tossers appeared and it was time to get out of there for safety's sake.. quick call to salty to see where he was and popped up to where he was staying up the road.. talks of smoothies and late night sessions and using 'ben' as bait.. hunger got the better so we (me and herself) went in search of food... found out that only 2 places serve food before 5pm on a sunday.. and the one we went into serve food poisoning too.. after eating i had to cancel the fishing session i had planned and hit the road for home, but managed a quick stop in johnnie foxs for something that not only resembled food but tasted great too (unlike the last place).. back on the road again and as we headed west the clouds were thicker and it started to rain as we hit Galway
