Boat Purchase

Hi All,

Myself and a friend are contemplating purchasing a boat. I have read a few of the threads on this forum and they are very informative. We plan to do a Level 2 handling course and get up to speed on safety etc. before we take to the water.
We would however have no boat purchasing experience and would welcome any advice/tips in this area. From where to purchase etc. what to look for?

Give the lads an idea of your budget and what its going to be used for. IE Are you planning on taking smallies out, Are you prepared to sacrifice speed over handling, where you are based as to give a clue as to what kind of areas you will be fishing etc, how many aboard etc etc.....

Budget up to €5000
Out of Howth/Greystones/Greenore
Nothing too far from shore/bay so handling over speed would be more important
Kids would probably be on board the odd time
4 adult max

Sit back and write down what you want from a boat. Launch and retrieve or mooring….etc.
Have a look at what anglers in your area are using.
Have a look at: boats & outboards and apolloduck.

Oh yes indeedy, how very true this is.

There's a whole world of gear, kit, equiptment, accessories, must-haves, anna-haves and don't-needs-but-gonna-get-anyway after you actually get your boat.

Figure another 50% on top of you budget over the following two years, to be on the safe side.

Always budget for a new or major repair to an engine when buying second-hand as you have no fail safe way of telling the true condition of an engine when buying... it may be going like a clock today but go belly up tomorrow!

Take someone that knows about boats to check the hull condition paying particular attention to the keel, skeg and transom and any areas that could be damaged from grounding, launching /retrieving, or positioning incorrectly on a trailer etc.

as the man who i bought my boat off said, a boat is like a hole in the ocean.you will always be putting some money into it.he was dead right but you have great comfort when you have it.ive a 17ft dory tri hull is very sturdy when choppy.40hp fourstroke honda very reliable and efficient.i dont think you would want any less the 40hp and any less than 17 or 18 ft.did 20 miles in very rough sea and used probably €30 euro i thought it was very good.

My first boat was a orkney long liner with cuddy and a 20 ho honda elc start power trim found it a good starter boat its now for sale
