Went to Kerry for a long weekend’s fishing. Not an ideal time with the Bass closed season but it was the only weekend we could all make it.
Couldn’t have picked a better weekend for weather..! We fished from Thursday til Monday.
So in a valiant effort to avoid bass we stayed away from most of our usual marks and tried deeper water marks. First night it worked well, plenty of pollock on the spinner. Not massive fish, around the pound to 2 pound mark. All good fun though.
Second day it kinda backfired. We had pollock again but also sea trout. I had 3 landed and around 6 or more that got off after a few seconds or more.
All returned immediately unharmed. Largest was a pound and a half at best. Have pics and will post later.
We moved to the bottom and used Rag in a lug infested area. Hoping for flounder and wrasse but we did get 2 bass. Not big – around the 2 pound mark again. Swiftly returned. Also had flounder and a sole..! Nice session. Kept busy.
Third day – Took out a boat. (Again avoiding bass was our aim) Worked well. Deep water mark. Plenty of pollock up to around the 6Ib mark. Mackerel, launce, and Cod. Proper report will be posted in the boat section. Later that night we moved to bottom fishing again in a flounder mark. Using flounder traces etc we hoped to avoid Bass but we did catch 5. I’d like to point out we have never had a bass from this mark before – typical..!!
Again all returned. None bigger than a pound, all returned safely. Clearly a nursery type area and will be avoided in future. Plenty of flounder though, not big ones, but kept active on every cast.
So all in all a great weekend. Lots of pollock and flounder. Even a few trout thrown in. Macks were very scarce. Only macks we got were from a boat and none from the shore…! Madness.
Honestly did try to avoid bass but moving to new marks didn’t always work.
I think we caught 7 bass in total. Largest was around 2Ib and most were around the 1Ib mark. We clearly stumbled on a nursery type area which will be avoided in future. Our usual marks looked amazing and it was honestly very hard not to fish them.
Plenty of fish though and 7 species. No blanks on any session. Plenty of sun and plenty afternoon beers.
We lost one day due to rugby final and Champioship playoff…hic….
Will post pics later on or tomorrow whan I get time.

Nice report Eoghan and some nice fishing. I am sure it was difficult to stay away from your usual bass marks. Interesting to see you got a sole, unusual one but you get a few black sole from a couple of marks down there i hear. Only a week and i will be there. Mostly ray fishing for me but i'll give the wrasse and pollack a bash as well.

Great report and great outcome. I would really appreciate if you can share with me through PM some of the marks you have tried. I have driven down to dingle from my home in Limerick 3 times using float, 2 & 3 hook flappers using macks, squid and rag as baits. All 3 sessions have been blanks and they have been on different marks. I am already being asked if I am really going down to Dingle or going somewhere else : )
.
Well done on your great session. I hope to have something like that in the future. Half of that fun would do

Cheers guys. Only getting round to getting some pics done, im getting lazy n old.
Francis - Place was alive with fish, would love to be going down after the ban. Let us know how you get on.
The spot I fished with you before looked amazing but we left it. Flat calm and crying out for a popper.
Worth a look if the ray fail to show.
