new record for river foyle
a new record has been made on the river foyle, the biggest salmon got on rod and line now stands at 33 an a 1/2lb, it was got up the river by a fella from strabane, who got it on the fly rod, cant mind the name of the fly but i think it was called a green highlander. the report was on the news last night, the loughs agency have made a cast of the salmon, and have taken samples, scales ect;
if i find a link to the report i will put it up...

Re: new record for river foyle
K2 caught the last ten seconds or so of the news report last night and was telling me about this. They had the fish beside a dog I think it was to show you how big it was and apparently it was a huge fish!!
Fantastic, what a lucky man! A fish of a lifetime - caught on a fly rod too, wow!!

wasnt caught on the fly rod ,he got it on the bubble and fly fished on a spinning rod.played for half an hour ,landed it on his own without a landing net ,caught at the confluence of the mourne and finn,

That's a fish of a lifetime right there but I can't help thinking that its a pity it didn't get a chance to spawn.

Local man Patsy Mc Hugh had the fish of a lifetime yesterday from Lifford Bridge, at the confluence of the River Foyle and River Finn. The monster weighed in at 33 1/2 lbs! It was taken on a size 10 Moy Green Highlander, using the bubble and fly method.
Patsy had a 45 minute fight before he landed the huge fish. He had no net with him so he had to run it up a sand bank! Thirty minutes into the fight he reckoned the fish was around the 15lb mark, but as time wore on he got a better look at it and had to re-assess his estimate.
It seems like the fish was headed for the River Finn as it was hooked at the mouth of the Finn and landed in the junction pool of the Foyle. By all accounts it was a richly deserved catch as Patsy has been fishing Lifford all of his life. Well done on landing that fine specimen.

ok, my mistake. it was on bubble n' fly

at the end of the day it was got on a fly, and is now the new record for the foyle, and will be a hard one to beat..

It had probably done so once or twice already in its lifetime Dave.
Bubble and Fly is not Fly Fishing IMHO especially if using a spinning rod. I reckon if he had been doing "traditional" Fly Fishing with a standard set up he would still be playing it as we speak

Pity it had to be killed allright but we don't know how deepy hooked etc. it was and as others have said he probably deserved it.
33LB caught in England a couple of weeks ago too, lets hope we are seeing some early results of the drift net ban..

Ah I know that Mark, it just looks like such a majestic creature but you know yourself and it could well have been deeply hooked alright, who knows. Still a fish of a lifetime though.

Aye I totally agree with you Dave.
I released a 15LB Springer last year and only last week lost a ~ 20LB fish at the net (my fault didn't play it long enough)

So my C & R effort (be it voluntary or not

Cracking news about the nets, let hope that continues all over the country, we have abused this natural resource for long enough

Was talking to someone recently and they stated "As far as I see it the ban on the drift nets has just left more Salmon for the Seals"
