North Clare 18.05.10

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: chrisfeeney30 & myself

Duration: 18:30-23:30

Tide: HT @ 21:12 4.7m

Weather: Overcast with persistant drizzle wind SW F2/3

Bait: Fresh Mussel, Rag, Lug, Maddies, Squid, Sandeel, Razor, Mackerel & Bluey

Rigs: Running ledgers, pulleys, Flappers, Conger rigs.... and in the end what we had left in the box

Results: Pouting

Report: Had arranged to bring Chris out for a session and after i was given a mark that throws up a couple of Plaice, we decided to give it a go. Chris had collected some fresh Mussel earlier in the day so armed to the teeth with bait we set off. Well not before i gave Chris the fright of his life..... I pulled up outside his place and i spotted his blue tackle box outside in the porch so i thought i'll load up the car being helpful like... so in went his box bucket of mussels wellies etc then i spotted his rod bag so in that went..... Having not being noticed i drove down the road a bit and rang Chris to say i'd be there in 2min and to be outside ready.... Well i could see Chris run to the gate of his house with a look of complete shock and dismay then he ran back into the house.... he came down to me a min or two later nearly shaking when he spotted his gear in the car.... you *$@%@* he says heart pounding    sorry Chris couldn't resist might be a valuable lesson though  We arrived at the mark and knew straight off that the Plaice were off the cards, as i was told it needed flat calm conditions to bring them in close feeding on the mussels. While there was no pounding swell there it wasn't flat calm either. We sent out some flattie rigs and started spinning for Pollack. I'd pointed out a spot on the oppostie side of the bay/ravine from us that was lower down to the water and said that area there is dangerous as it has ledges that platorm down in steps into the sea and random surges can engulf it...we were fishing about an hour when 3 lads came down and started spinning over on the said area one started to edge his way down towards the end where the surf can come over i went over and shouted across to one of his friends that was looking at me and started pointing to his friend and waving him back, he called to his friend and waved him back i looked out and saw a swell forming about 100yards out and knew it was going to wash over the ledges i shouted again to his pal and pointed out to sea he saw the swell which was now very close he roared at his friend who started running and had just cleared the ledge when it was engulfed. They waved over to say thanks... if fishing the rock marks in Clare please don't get too low to the water observe an area for awhile say 10-15mins watch the wave formations if in doubt don't fish simple as move to a safer location don't put yourself at risk. There are some great fishing platforms in Clare that are perfectly safe if a little bit of commonsense is used... anyway back to the fishing nothing much happening we were getting snagged crack offs losing hooks etc etc Chris had lost a good fish when it dived for the bottom and snagged him he then got a good wallop and landed his PB Pouting around the 2lb Chris lost another fish after getting snagged again next it was my turn losing a fish due to a snag finally i managed to land a small pouting blank saved at least as the light went we went for congers and surprise surprise.... we both got snagged   there was a ledge about 30 yards out that we just kept finding next bright calm day at low water with polaroids on i'll map the area a bit so we'll know what to avoid in the future....
