Inishowen coastline 16-5-10

#1 Post by fishermannum1 »

People me and a mate

Duration 8.30pm to 11.45ish

Tide high just after 9

Weather some light rain

Bait mac/squid/sandeel/lug

Rigs pully's/2 hook flapper's

Results Dogs/coalies/flounder + 1 small huss

Report got a call from a friend of mine yesterday evening saying that his shift at work had been changed, and did i fancy a few hours fishing. i asked him what he was looking to target, and he said that he would love to try for a huss, as he has never got one before. so after a quick think of a suitable mark to hit i phoned him back, arranged the time and tactics, bait type of gear ect; that he would need. soon enough we were on the road. this mark can be a bit of a nightmare to fish so no boxs or anything, not even a tripod. we kept everything to a bare minimum, one rod each pocket full of weights and rotten bottom clips, and the bait wrapped up in a plastic bag and just stuffed into my pocket. within minutes of the baits hitting the water i was into fish, first was a nice flounder of near enough 40cm, then three more all around the 35cm, the mate had still not got anything at this stage, so i swapped places with him and sure enough he was straight into his first fish of the night, a cracker of a flounder of around 47 cm's. we got a few more all fairly smallish, so i decided to change tactic's, i told him to put a pulley rig on, and we moved about 60 yards to a favorite mark of mine. on every cast we landed a doggie, with a few good ones of around 3 lb in among them. then it started to get very slow, and things wern't looking good for his target. so i produced another small bag from my pocket, another bait that i've had fermenting for nearly two weeks in a tub with fish oils and cod liver oil, i changed our pully's to a pennel and baited them up with the "NEW BAIT" after a bit of a waiting game my rod nearly went over the side, i quickly lifted into what felt like a very good fish, got a magic scrap out of it. it was on its last legs at the edge when the leader just snapped. i felt sick as a pig, for this one was well into double figures. just a few minutes later the mates rod got a very good hit and he was into one. and again after a decent scrap we got him landed, a nice huss of 6 lb 3 oz, the mate was jumping around like a mad man for this was his first ever huss, i was well pleased for him.
after that the coalies came at us thick an fast and wiped out our bait in no time, was a very enjoyable wee session, and i was made up big time for the mate...

the leader snapped al', starting to go off these tapered leaders, for this is the second time this has happened with these, think i'll go back two the full length 60-80lb mono leaders, for have lost faith in the tapered ones...

Yeah taperd leaders are dead on for clean light fishing off the beach but i would def be on your standard 70-8lb shockleader for off the rocks fishing into rougher ground.

Well done Don, a great read as always.
It's a pity you lost that fish, it sounded like it was a good one and would have been nice to have landed it and seen it but sure knowing you you'll go back and get an even bigger one next time!!
Keep up the good work (work, what's that?  ).
