Arklow, 15-05-10

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me and fishface

Duration:7-30-11pm

Tide:didnt move much to be honest

Weather:beaut of a calm evening

Bait:rag,lug,mack,

Rigs:flappers

Results:doggies,dabs,codling,whiting

Report:not much to report, just doing it cos Fishface is pestering me to put up a report cos he caught more fish than me  . We went to Arklow as we seemingly have to stop catching huge bass for a month as its banned :? .With the likes of big bass safe from us for the next 4 weeks we decided to hit Arklow for some smaller fish for a change  . We (Fishface) found a quiet spot away from the badboy racers with their loud pipes and smash and grab habits, where we could see our unmodified cars at all times. We were only about 20yds away from them and could therefore enjoy the nights fishing ,not like the last time we were here  . We set up and cast out our baits into the calm seas and it wasnt long before the old rodtips were nodding nicely and we were into some nice fish,,,,doggies and decent Dabs,,,,,,best dab about 27cms. Though not the compeditive type I always make an exception and enjoy beating Fishface, especially in his own county:lol: ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and when i was ahead 10 fish to 4 the world was indeed a happy place to be in  ,,,,,,,,but the smile was once again wiped off my not so pretty face as he started the old pendulum casting lark and started pulling in loads of doggies at distance   ,,,,,,he was even getting fed up catching them out there in the distance while i was doing my Eric impression(sorry Eric) and scratching around in the suds in desperation to keep ahead at all costs,,,to no avail unfortunately:roll:  He caught up and then passed me out with doubles of dabs and whiting, dogs and codling. I decided, having caught the biggest Dab,that I was targeting decent Dabs and consoled myself that mine were not teabags like his. Seriously though, it was a busy night with plenty of fish,me with 19,,,,,,,,,,3 dogs, 6 dabs, 5 whiting, and 5 codling,,,,,,,,,,Neil with 22 fish,,,,with a nice 30cm codling and plenty of dogs, whiting and dabs. Rag worked best on this beach which has always produced for us,with the only downside in the past being the badboy racers. The following night I went to Bray Harbour with the 20 leftover rag and fished for 4 hours at low water for 2 fish ,teabag dab and 25cm codling,,,which were caught in the last half hour as the tide came back in in darkness and boy was I glad I didnt blank,,what a difference a day(in Bray!) makes

ps didnt get any pics of the doggies as Neil mustnt have pressed the button down on the camera, must tell him it doesnt take pictures by itself when you say cheese

great report and pics as always dave. you'd think neil might let you win the odd session     . but when it comes to fishing at distance neil can fairly launch a lead   i reckon thats why he bought the petzl ultra,,, just to serve as a warning to any low flying aircraft before a cast    . well done guys. we'll see you in july when we do our summer east coast pilgrimage

Good report as usual - nice haul of fish.
Since the bass ban I am finding it difficult to get motivated to get out fishing - maybe with the current spell of warm weather a visit to West Cork for pollock/wrasse fishing might be worth a shot at the weekend. Why could we not have had these warm southerly winds a week ago - the bass would have been lining up to have a go at my baits
Cod season Winter 2013/14: 117 cod (best fish: 6.5 lbs)
Cod season Winter 2014/15: 193 cod (best fish: 4.25 lbs)

Bass Totals:
2007: 1
2008: 37
2009: 120
2010: 44
2011: 151
2012: 79
2013: 20

Well done Dave & Neil, you's had a very productive session by the sounds of things.
Don't worry Dave about Neil beating you (again!!  ) you'll get your own back on him someday and wipe the smile of his fishface!!  :P
I know you two are both quite competitive when you's are out fishing together, but someone has to win and although I don't think distance casting is always needed to catch fish, I think on this occasion it helped him to out further to where they where. So get practising your pendulum cast and next time you'll beat him!
