Fisherman drowns as boat capsizes off Wexford

The body of a fisherman who went missing when his boat capsized earlier this morning has been recovered from the sea.

The Rosslare Life Boat crew found the man's body at 11am in an area to the south of Greenore Point.

The man had been fishing with another man when the small boat capsized at 4.30am.

The second man had managed to swim ashore to raise the alarm and a large search operation was launched.

The naval vessel the LE Ciara assisted in the search operation along with numerous fishing vessels.

this is something that we take for granted every time we go out fishing that we, l come back safe.and then we read something like this and it brings us back to reality.evry time we go out no matter what the conditions lifejackets on.
if someone doesent want to wear it drop them back ashore as i did last year .i want to express my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of this fellow angler.who like so many of us was just looking forward to a days fishing god rest his soul

Sad news I remember a couple of years ago seeing story like this on the news and it showed the boat it was no more then a punt I wouldn't have put it on a lake never mind out to see....R.I.P

Sad news indeed. Deepest condolences to the family.

I had the misfortune of capsizing my tender as I stepped into it off my boat a couple of years ago.
Would have been funny if I wasn't out cold from hitting my scone on the hull of the boat at the time on the way into the drink. First I knew about it was coming back to the surface courtesy of my crewsaver. Now I have it on even why I'm launching the tender off the slip.

phil most accidents happen while in the harbour or going to the mooring my life jacket stays in the boot of the car i put in on going out and put it back in the boot when i come in . a simple habit to get in too. i had one guy last year wouldent put on a life jacket and i brought him back to the quay.he was too cool to wear one well 5 hrs waiting on his mates to come back in certainly cooled him off.

rip, its terrible hear these things, i go out on my boat maybe twice a week and id onl fully tie up the life jacket once im out of the harbour, but these events would make ya think twice

A HUGE CROWD bid farewell to Derek Sinnott in Rosslare Harbour yesterday (Tuesday), after his death in a fishing accident off Rosslare on Saturday morning.

Derek and his cousin and best friend, Thomas, got into difficulty off Greenore Point in their small fishing cot at 4.00a.m.

They had been out fishing with another friend, Alan Walsh, all night and had taken on a big catch, when the boat flipped over.

Thomas (18) tried desperately to help his 27-year-old cousin and neighbour at St. Brendan’s Estate, but was unable to keep him afloat, watching as the sea took him under.

The Wexford people (no longer freely online) states that that they had set their nets the before, and that the boat started taking in water from the weight of the fish in the boat. As they steered the boat, the current flipped them into the sea.

This is very sad news. My thoughts are with his family and everyone who knew him. It is a reminder that safety for all of us anglers should be the most important thing when planning any trip whether it be on a boat or on the shore. Always wear a life jacket when climbing high rocks or going on a boat and if our going on your own somewhere let someone know where you are going and what time you are expected to be home at so that if something happens and you don't return then someone knows where to look for you.
When going out on a boat espicially take extra time before hand to suss out tides, weather forcasts and what type of tidal currents you may be going into on the boat.
It's better to be safe than sorry but accidents can happen sometimes no matter how careful you are or how good a mariner you may be but if we do what we can to reduce the risks it's better for our health & safety in the long term.
Please everyone take care, we don't want to have to hear about anything like this happeneing again whether it's a member of this site or not, it doesn't matter, human life is precious and we have to protect ourselves from danger at all times.

I agree.......stop the rumours about how he died or what he was doing when the accident happened. The fact is the guy is dead and no matter what - it was not a nice way to die, no-one deserves to go like that!!

I fully agree with twinkle and KERRY1 in this matter, because I know from my own personal experience how it feels to loose a child. My eldest daughter Johanna died in a freak accident during play where she strangled herself in a rope used as swing. Her siblings were playing underneath her and didn't even notice that she suffocated above them in the tree. It was only the tremendous support from neighbors, friends and above all, from complete strangers, it was in all the newspapers, probably because it happened on Good Friday and it was the 13th. Anyway, we received over 2000 cards and letters from people we did not now and have never met before and more than likely never will, but the feeling of not to be alone in your grief and sorrow made all the difference to us and kept us going. I am not sure if we would be there where we are today without the deep sense of understanding brought to us by good, honest and decent people from Ireland. Thank you all.
And sending my heartfelt condolences to Derek's friends and relations is the least what I can do. No matter what. Rest in Piece!!!

as usual ya have sumed it up dereck it curels a knot in my stomack to see that people are so hell bent to see what he was doin . the man lost his life god rest his soul and god help his family
