First Fish Caught
This is only my second post so I can't post it on the shore reports forum.
Went out on Sunday with the 3 kids each armed with a €20 telescopic rod and reel set. Set them up with a small bubble float with a size 4 hook.
We had gone out the day before to Dollymount and dug some rag and lug so we were set for a 2 hour session 1 each side of high tide.
Lots of activity and plenty of bites and a huge amount of excitement every time the float disappeared below the surface. Missed a few bites but then the the youngest got a big tug and he reeled in a fine Wrasse, a picture of which I hope has uploded properly.
There was a bit of envy, and that was just from me as I've never caught one. Took the photo on the phone and returned it to catch another day.
Two more small wrasse caught which kept everyone happy and was good sport on light gear.
All in all it was a enjoyable session and have the youngest obsessed and asking every day when were going out again.
We missed plenty of bites where judging by the weight, we had the fish on the line but as we reeled it in we lost it. Is that common with Wrasse. Any tips on how to hook them up properly.

Re: First Fish Caught
Well done on the Wrasse, great report I think it sums up this forum for me. With all the visual and verbal vomit you get on the tv, its great to see families enjoying a nice day out fishing

Re: First Fish Caught
Well done. Great fish there. I'm thinking of bringing my two eldest boys off fishing some day soon. Although they seem to get loads of enjoyment from crab fishing with the old orange crab lines.

Re: First Fish Caught
nice fish mate. try getting some circle hooks or crab hooks i find these give you a better hook up when fishing for fish like wrasse and Pollack.

Re: First Fish Caught
Never mind the wrasse - I love the kid's hat!
Only joking, well done. Yeah as someone already said, it's about timing with the wrasse. I have most success fishing for them with a rotten bottom setup. I've had many fish give ferocious bites without a hook up. Then I'd have a very timid bite and the fish will have probably hooked itself. More often than not I keep my rod in my hand and after the first two initial tap, tap, taps I then strike on the next bite. Even though this results in more hook ups for me, I still don't manage to land all the fish because wrasse are brilliant at getting my line caught in rocks, barnacles, weed and kelp etc.
Walk on!
