Browns Bay, Co. Antrim 08/05/10

#1 Post by rab01 »

People:Myself

Duration:7.30am-11am

Tide:Dropping

Weather:Sunny, strong NE gusts

Bait:Ragworm

Rigs:3 hook flapper

Results:1 Plaice or Flounder, you decide.

Report:Not much to report here was a very quiet morning but my last two outings were blanks so I was relieved to catch to be honest. The Northerly breeze was freezing so I cast out put the bells on the rod tip and found myself a sheltered spot to keep warm. Bells worked a treat I could hear any bites very clearly, first 3 bites I missed by the time I got to the rod but I didn't miss the next one. The fish put up a nice wee scrap, well happy. Now I would always assume the fish was a Plaice in the past but after seeing alot of spotty Flounder pics on this site I'm not sure to be honest, you judge for yourself. Nice fish anyway! :)

Rab nice Plaice. A good way to identify them is the lateral line is smooth on a Plaice and there are between 3 and 5 ,I think, boney nodules on the head running up to the eyes in a curve if you look closely.

nice one rab :P . lovely wee plaice 8) thee wee boney nodules from the eye to the lateral line are a dead give away  . every spotty orange flounder jordan gets has to be closely inspected as he's still waiting to get his first plaice    . have you read any of the articles about the proposed underground saltmine leeching that's gonna happen down that way? scary stuff man,, i'd enjoy the fishing down there before it's destroyed for generations
