People:Mickeyfish, My son Mike & Wrassebasher
Duration: 7am to 1pm
Tide:Bottom
Weather:Irish
Bait:Taz Devils blue and silver No 13
Results: 3 Shad For Me & 3 Shad for wrassebasher
Report:Decided to head down early for the turn in the tide for a few hours spinning, we missed and dropped a few fish and managed to land 3 each, nothing bigger than 2 lbs, It was my first time fishing for them and i noticed they need a lot of attention to recover before they can return to the swim,

Well done lads,
I know what you mean about them needing a bit of attention when putting them back but I found that once you don't keep them out of the water too long they are usually ok.
I'm just wondering was it just me or does the fishing seem a bit mixed down there at the moment, I was down there twice over the past week with mixed results.

Well done lads, I'm glad you's got a few.
I was going to go down myself this year but decided to give it a miss, it something I intend on doing at some stage just for the experience and to say that I have done it.
From what I have heard, they jump all over the place when you hook one, did you find that?

Re: My First Shad Saint Mullins 06/05/2010
to be honest i didn't get to much of a fight they were hooked close to the bank and they just broadsided themselves in the flow of the river, so i didn't really get the pleasure of a good fight but will be going down again next week and hopefully we get bigger ones too

Re: My First Shad Saint Mullins 06/05/2010
Good little session with your son!
Nice little sport fish, those shad. During the summer we can catch loads of them here in Holland. The hook does tend too come out quite easily. My pb is hooking 5 of them on one single cast.

Nice sportfish on light gear plus they make a great bait for big bass.

Greetings, Paul

Re: My First Shad Saint Mullins 06/05/2010
I can't believe I missed you mick. Was there over the weekend myself..... I'll throw up a post in the next couple of days as I'm up to my eyes in work at the moment. Very difficult fishing, but once you find where they are active you will get a few. I managed a few fish on Friday and Saturday, but It was a bit of a slog, with the fish being inactive for long periods and then just coming on for 45 mins, then gone again... Still, They are a great fish, but as you mentioned they do need some TLC if they are to go back alive. They do seem to be in very early this year and I am wondering will it be all over by Thursday or will there be another run of fish.
