Re: COD FRAUD
There's a restaurant in the town where I live and they are selling coalfish on their menu but they have it down as being Cod. Not good practice at all.

Re: COD FRAUD
There was an issue over here in the chippers that they were selling a type of catfish as cod. Turned out it was quite common and people didn't realise.

I could never understand why the authorities turn a bind eye to this. I'm pretty certain that if a butcher started selling horse and labelled it beef, he wouldn't be allowed to trade for long.

Re: COD FRAUD
there was a programme on bbc 1 yesterday called food fighters and they did an article on this. the chippers in england are selling river cobbler ( a vietnamese cat fish) as cod. and it looks and tastes just like our humble cod. they only found out it was river cobbler after scientififc genetic testing on fish suppers they seceretly bought from the takeaways
. but it's been common pratice for chippers to sell coalifish and pollack off as cod for years now. the bbc programme springwatch did a bit about this 2 years ago where they battered fillets of cod, pollack, coalie and ling. they then did a blind taste with some people at the seaside who all claimed the only fish they would eat would be cod and haddock as all the rest tasted like muck. there was quite a few red faces when they all reckoned the tastiest of all the samples they ate was the ling, followed by pollack and the cod coming third
. just goes to show that when you skin, fillet and batter 4 different kinds of fresh whitefish, that it's anyones guess as to what species your actually eating, espically when the chippers develope different methods such as rolling the pollack fillets in cornflour to reduce it's moisture content before being dipped in batter so that when it's cooked the batter holds to the meat without the wet void between the two.

Part of my job as an EHO is to check out this sort of thing so I presume there is an ROI equivalent who would be happy to follow up reports.

Re: COD FRAUD
The irony is, if the chippers openly advertised Vietnamese Fish and Chips as a special, it'd probably become a top seller.....
