Worrying times in waterford

#1 Post by Tipp Angler »

Took my son to two locations in waterford today crab fishing, and was disgusted to find at one pier boxes of fish just left rotting on the side all sorts of fish including bass!! and sea trout amongst other things.

At the other pier after fishing from one side and catching lots of crabs when we went to release them in the harbour we found dog fish carcass's and when we went round the other side of the pier to look at the boats. We noticed at the bottom of the harbour a mountain of dead carcass's of all sorts of fish.

I have heard this goes on but was disgusted to see it for myself the amount of fish in both harbours was mad, no wonder our stocks are thinning.

Is there anyway this can be reported or is this monitored in other ways?

if there was a name on the boxes you could have rang the local fisheries officer saying there was Bass and sea trout landed but it could probably be argued that someone other than the owner used the box.

Fish boxes usually carry the name of the originating co-op and boats will often carry boxes from all over the place.

Dead fish dumped in a harbour are pollution and a possible health hazard (not to mention food for rats..) so the local authority environment people might be able to take action.

Any chance of the name of the harbour? I have my suspicions but just wanting to confirm (based on past observations and also fishing activity that I witnessed today)

Forget the name its between annestown and bunmahon you go down a fairly steep hill to get to it. has a small beach at end of pier.

Just shocked by it and what with the little fella taking an interest in the fishing poses some awkward questions why are all the dead fish in boxes etc.

Such a shame as this area south east has some great marks and great fish judging by the boxes and a shame that they are ending up this way or worse decaying at the bottom of harbour.
