Wexford 16/04/10

#1 Post by dfella25 »

People:Gordy, Rodger & myself. And Trout Hunter Jnr and his dad further up the beach.

Duration:5:30pm until 1:30am

Tide:Rise and drop

Weather:Lovely but freezing after dark.

Bait:Lug, Rag, Mack & Peeler Crab.

Rigs:Up and overs, Pulley's, Flappers of different hook sizes.

Results:Flounder, codling, whiting, schoolies, dabs and doggies.

Report:After last weeks spot being slow we picked a different beach in Wexford with hopes of a decent bass or a pup smut. It's been a long winter and just to hear about some summer species turning up is great news. Unfortunately the summer Friday traffic seems to be hotting up too.

We were set up and fishing by 5:30 with Gordy taking a nice flounder early on. Fishing was very slow after this with only tiny flats now and again. As dusk fell the codling turned up and I managed a few around 28cm and tiny tiny whiting every other cast. Gordy on the other hand was like a Dog Warden and was pulling them on every cast. They were going after his lug and were close in to shore which was a little odd. I managed to avoid them thank God. However I managed nothing at distance all night long. A few crabs were martyred in the name of a pup smoothie but never happened.

It was nice to meet Trout Hunter and Junior on the beach. They had a nice couple of flats but the silver things seemed to be eluding everyone. Rodger pack off early due to work the next morning and the busy beach seemed to empty around this time. Myself and Gordy stayed the course and an hour after the drop I missed a massive rattle on the rod. A good half hour later I got a smaller bang and had hooked a 26cm schoolie. It took on a two hook flapper using 1/0 wire hooks. I think they are Mustad Salt hooks which are my favourite medium size fish hooks as they lip hook them perfect every time. Quick rebait and lobbed out and bang another within minutes. 25cm this time. Last two rag went on and cast again. A small take and I reeled in a 22cm schoolie this time, They were getting smaller so it was time to pack up and head for home.

Fisherman's prayer:
God grant that I may live to fish, For another rainy day.
But when my final cast is made, I then most humbly pray.
When nestled in your landing net, As I lay peacefully asleep.
You'll smile at me and judge, That I'm "good enough to keep"!
