daiwa 7ht mag not engaging

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

daiwa 7ht mag not engaging

#1 Post by beachbuddy »

I know theres a thread running running already on the 7ht mag,but i've a quick question i own one of these reels for 2 years now and it is a pleasure to use apart from recently when after casting the reel won't reingage no matter how many times i turn the handle then when i try at home the reel reingages
Any ideas on what i can do to rectify as its so easy to fish with even for an idiot like me,maybe a proper strip down and service is required but who or is there anyone in ireland to repair if necessary,i know some tackle shops won't touch them and have recommended sending directly to daiwa, any tips :?:

if you call into the Cork Angling Centre they have a notice up from a guy who does repairs and servicing, or even ring them and they might give you the number. i think his name is Derek. never used him so cant comment on his work.

Could be your pionion gear is warn, has the reel ever engaged during a cast lately( this can kill the pinion gear)
if so it's not a big job to fix

Cheers men for the replies, the reel has never reengaged during the cast, only after the cast when i go to put rod into the tripod, very annoying.
Red i'll give the magic roundabout people a call you'd never know,if not do i just return it directly to daiwa, now all i have to do is get it not engage again as just tried it again and its running fine typical

it wont kill a pinion gear, if lads learnt how to loosen the drag off before a cast

Even at that the pinion wouldnt effect the spool release button, my guses is there is a spring or spring loaded lever somewhere thats not working correctly or the whole re-engaging mechanisim is fubared, not a major job at all. I have 2 of these (and one is from the very 1st batch of 100 released from the UK) and neither have given me a days trouble, great reels IMO

Very true,,,, and can save you from a multitude of problems, even if it re-engages during a cast it lets the drag take the sting out of it and doent cause crack off/loss of gear.

i cant under stand lads that tighten down star drags the only thing i put it down to is inexperiance  . now it's the oppisite story using i fixed spool, you have to make sure the spool is locked down to stop spool slipping during a cast and the line cutting through your finger

Yes, Loosen it off enough so you can easily pull line off when needed, and yes always loosen off the drag completly when the reel is not in use.
