Squid as bait

#1 Post by barracuda »

Has anyone had much success around Ireland using squid from the shore - beach?

And what did you catch?

Shane,

Thanks for the reply, I have used it in other countries where it is popular - not here.

Do you use strips or whole ones, or heads? The heads are a popular snapper bait in australia, never heard of anyone using just the heads here.

I was thinking of trying squid strips off the beach.

I use it regularly now to tip off lug or rag, just a thin strip, works very well at times for flounder,
dab and even got a plaice last week using it.
Long time no sea.

I always find that squid works well for a variety of species around cork, its also great for keeping other more delicate baits like worms on the hook when (trying) to cast a long distance. I have found that a few rag or sand eel on the hook and then wrapped with a little squid and sum bait elastic is by far one of the most productive baits ive tried.

Hi Barracuda,

I've Started using heads for Cod fishing  . Managed a 6.5lb one a few weeks ago in Cork and lost a better fish at the net.

Is South Africa is is used extensively for nearly everything bar sharks. They have a huge array of methods with this one bait, but most involve tenderising it somewhat with a bait hammer. I've ofter thought about trying something similar over here, but haven't got around to it yet.

I use Squid like a sausage for Rays and Dogs. And then tip off Rag baits with a strip of it at times too.

i use squid on every trip, and sometimes when fishing for ray i tip the bait off with a half of a squids head, it works well for me. i also make up squid bombs, and these are great for the ray.

Squid and mack combo is killer for conger. Had my best shore caught one to this method. Also picked up a few whiting using squid strips and a nice cod with a squid hood stuffed with left over worms.

exact opposite from me, dont seem to get results of it from the shore apart from ray or doggie bashing as a tipping biat. off the boat its fairly effective for hounds, huss, dogs, ray etc... most of the time i find, there is often a much better bait availible for the job other than squid. :)
species for 2009 (42)
species for 2010 (27)
species for 2011 (12)
species for 2012 (8)
best advice for catching species is girls dont like fishing and its hard to catch fish when you sell all your gear'
