Results: 5 Bearded Rockling, Coalies, Dogs & Huss

Report: Spur of the moment session late Sunday evening lug to use up so collected Chris and went to try temp some flatties we didn't realise quite how bad the weather was until we pulled up at the mark good swell being pushed in with the SE wind. We set up regardless and put our backs to the wind and rain.... the wind kept increasing making things very difficult we stuck it out for a couple of hours but admitted defeat and reeled in I managed to save the blank with a 5 bearded rockling... it was a relief getting back ito a warm dry car it was very tough going.

Jakes and myself headed off to suss out some new marks in West Connemara. There was one Jakes had his eye on a nice looking rock mark casting onto clean ground with a deep channel no more than 60 yards out. We were drving out the headland towards the mark when we notice about 15 Dolphins hunting just off shore. We parked up and walked around the headland the mark wasn't as it seemed on OSI with a fairly step incline down onto rocks which themselves were pretty high up from the water we found one spot that could be accessed by 2 anglers travelling light but decided to leave it for another day as it looked too dangerous to be fished in darkness. The Dolphins had worked their way up to where we were and we could see a few of them shoaling fish in a circle while a couple breached fully clear of the water in the centre hitting the fish it was a spectacular sight and a shame neither of us had a camera on us to capture the display. We decided to scout out the other side of the Bay with the light fading and settled on a stoney beach with rocks to one side of it. Jakes set up tight to the rocks while i opted to fish the beach as we where trying to cover as much ground as possible. We were kept busy with dogs both of us getting into double figures... at one stage i was trying in close for rockling and whatever else might be in the gulley managed to pick off a couple of coalies. We were on our last casts and had a double hook up to finish me with a dog and Jakes with small huss nice to see one this early this mark has huss written all over it should be good craic later in the year. There were some Thorney egg cases on the beach so all good :)

Took a couple of comparison shots of the dog and huss but they didn't come out to clear...

Nice one Connor - looks as if things are starting to improve on the west coast, must get down again soon. Hopefully this weekend and on the hunt for Bass No 1 of the year.

it's great to be back out fishing again after a bit of a break. my first two sessions in two years produced 34 dogfish 1 thornback and a small huss. this new mark, like conor said, has savage potential and will be back again very soon. steve, if you knew about this mark why all the uncertainity about your galway meet on the 12th/13th june. lovely rock marks that can fit loads of people, a nice beach and plenty of room to camp. no houses or people to bother ye. and if anybody feels up to it on sunday the 2nd leg of the west coast league is on at ballyreen.
