Kerry Coast Mullet - March 2010.

#1 Post by KERRY1 »

People: Myself & K2

Tide: Various from Low to High

Method: Float set-up & Lures

Results: 1 Golden Grey mullet & 8 thick lipped mullet

Report:

I'm only getting around to putting this report up now, we've had computer problems - better late than never!
Myself and K2 headed down to the Kerry coast to target Bass. Little did we know, we would end up writing our first mullet report so early on in the season. Although there was Bass about to keep us occupied, the mullet where also in town much to K2's delight :D
We travelled 1811 miles in the 11 days we where down there but it was worth it as far as K2 was concerned with him not only catching 8 thick-lipped mullet but he caught his first ever Golden Grey mullet too!! :D The smile said it all!!
Not bad fishing for the middle of March, we were both over the moon. K2's mullet fishing is well under way, roll on the summer!
Below are pictures of some of the mullet K2 caught for you to have a look at.

Thanks Noel, they are early mullet indeed, it will be a while yet before they start to show up at the marks closer to home so we are over the moon to have caught a few so early on in the year.
To answer your question - Did I get any? The answer is no, I wasn't fishing for them, I was too busy plugging for the bass (and while I am on the subject our bass report is coming soon) and taking pictures of K2 with yet another mullet!!
On one day in particlar every time I looked around he had another on which meant that I had to stop fishing, climb over the rocks over to him and take yet another photograph before the fish was released back in safely. It was brilliant. I stopped fishing completely at one stage and just sat and watched. The best day we had was when he landed 5 mullet in the space of approx. 2 hours and on the same day he lost a couple too just as he was about to land them so he could have had alot more. We didn't have a net with us cause we didn't think we'd need it, it's always the way  Never mind, he caught enough anyway, there's no need to be greedy!!
Tom H wrote:Well done on your first G.G.M hope its the first of many :!:
Thanks Thomas, I hope your right and it is the first of many to come 8) K2 is already talking tactics to target them the next time we're away. I'm gonna give it ago next time too, I can't allow him to have all the fun! he can be my photographer for a change instead of the other way around!!
fishermannum1 wrote:nice one k2 8) people are checking their marks for the return of the mullet, and you are allready catching some, well done mate and congrats; on the g.g.m 8) 8)
Cheers Don mate. It is really good that K2 has caught some mullet already so early on in the season- it will be a while yet before there's a report up on any mullet showing up or being caught locally. We spotted a few just before we went away a few weeks ago but they weren't in big enough numbers to try and fish for them and they seem to have disappeared again anyhow. The water still needs to warm up quite abit before they start showing up here, as soon as the jelly fish make an appearance then the signs should be good for the return of the mullet, we both can't wait.

Cheers John :D Do you fish for them yourself?
If you do, you'll know undersatnd why we love fishing for them so much.
Al and Jordan wrote:nice fishing guys 8) i've been checking out a few mullet marks recently, but no sign of them yet.
Thanks Al, the last time we seen any mullet around locally was the few we told you about that we seen just before we went away, they don't seem to be there now, Since we've came back we've been having a look anytime we've been near there but just as you said, there's no sign of them.
It'll shouldn't be too much longer though. A few weeks of warm weather (here's hoping in this country  ) and they should make an appearance.
stefwest wrote:nice fishing well done nice catch of mullet great sport
Thanks stefwest, they are cracking sport. I would reccommend it to anyone to give them a go, if you ever see them in a harbour for example get your gear out and fish for them, but if you've never done it before then be warned - they will send you mad!! Hair pulling out time wouldn't be in it, a friend of mine is nearly bald from fishing for them. They really know how to annoy you, a very smart fish indeed.
Dawsey wrote::shock: nice one guys on the early season mullet. And that's a crackin gg! Ya can tick that off the species list now  looks like a crackin' spot down there.
Thanks Dawsey, I know like me and K2 you can't wait to start fishing for them up here again, hopefully your first time down this year will be as good as last year's.
That was brilliant, your first cast in I think it was and you got one, brilliant 8)
We'll not say anything about what happened after that though eh?

seanie35 wrote:well done on the early mullets what bait did you use for the ggm or was it a lure :!:
Thanks seanie 8) We have been trying to catch one for a while now. During our time down in March K2 tried several different methods to try and catch one - the beauty of golden grey mullet is that unlike the thick-lipped mullet there are a few ways in which you can catch one. You can spin for them, float-fish and ledger for them too.
K2's g.g.m took a spinner with some maddies on the end of it. The thick-lipped mullet where caught using a float set-up with bread.
peakle wrote:nice fish what weight was the ggm, nice photos
Thanks peakle. We didn't weigh the fish, but we all reckon it was close to specimen weight which for the g.g.m is 0.68kg. They are alot smaller in size compared to the thick-lipped mullet with the specimen weight of this fish being 2.268kg.
K2 also noticed that the g.g.m was alot more slippier to touch when he was putting it back in.
bsloan wrote:nice looking fish them mullet. hav never tried for them altho hav heard they put up one hell of a scrap. many congrats!
Cheers bsloan, you should try fishing for them sometime, they do give you one hell of a scrap. You just need to have alot of time and patience but it's worth it in the end when you finally catch one. Good luck :D

declan65 wrote:Nice mullet there and congrats on the g.g.m. :D :D
