ennareilly 3/4/10 schoolie hunt

#1 Post by sea serpant »

people: me + sidekick vino

time: 9.00p.m-2.45a.m

tide: low and rising (high tide app 2.30a.m)

bait: lug,rag,sandeel,peeler

rigs: 1 hook clip 2/0- 2 hook flappers 1/0

result: the dogfish have returned  and i mean with a vengence  and a steady flow of nice plumpish codling all night :D but stil not a sight of the silver fela's

After observing the weather all week and seeing how hostile it was i decided to plan a trip for saturday night in hope that the wind would bring a bit of life to the sea and maybe with a bit of luck some early bass would play ball.I knew it was still a bit early in the season but reports of a steady flow of schoolies showing up on the wicklow beaches filled my head and the optimist in me took over.Although the rougher weather would help my chances with the bass i also knew that it could stop me fishing altogether if the big hauls of early summer weed show :( and it was a definitly a possibility on the beaches i was planning on trying which were kilcoole and killoughter and this fact made me less optimistic.I had a back up plan to hit bray harbour if weed or weather prevailed but didnt fancy my chances of schoolies there so with a bit of asking around about fishing conditions on the east coast i decided to head a little further down to ennareilly which is always worth a shot and supposedly free from weed :D So i picked up my best mate vino (recently really getting into shore fishing and wantd to try out his new penn rod) and we headed towards ennareilly.
We arrived on the beach and found another bloke with some younger family members also fishing and after a quick chat with him set up the gear and sent baits out to sea.We were armed to the teeth with all the finest of bass and schoolie baits but i immedietly noticed how calm and fine a night it was which normally after a week of rain would be highly welcomed but with the sea being as flat as it was it didnt look like bass conditions  We got into the fishing anyway and i had my first dogfish since summer last year and it wasnt really a joyfull reunion especially
when i started to land 1 and two every cast :x but thank god as the tide started to turn the codling found our lug and peeler baits and started to come on the feed with double shots and the nicest being about a pound. We stayed well into the night and had a nice fill of codling but no bass :( ah sure we have waited this long another couple of weeks wont kill us  :)
