Braid for beach casting?

#1 Post by clogherbass »

Does anyone use braid for beach casting? I know braid can get spongy after being well used and it can slice your finger handy, but would it suit for beach casting? Just a thought :|

From a fixed spool, yes, its brilliant. Multipliers - NO  I have tried a few times and failed to use it on multi's with any success....braid will dig into itself and will cause a tangle...very expensive mistakes...so gave up and stuck to low diameter mono.

Hope that is some help??

hi i recently switched to braid for beachcasting after using mono and after a little adjusting (thinking every twitch was a humungous fish) i have to say i would stick with the braid , better distance with the lower diameter, stronger, more sensitive and i also find its hardier than mono  sure try it anyways
Species....good film.....I'll get my coat

If you're looking for a low diameter mono try Ultima F1 . I used braid for beachcasting but it's not suited for all occasions , the sensitivity is great though but caused me to jump the gun on a number of occasions , and finger slice is no fun , I prefer to use braid for boat and lure fishing.

we switched to braid for all our fixed spool reels a year ago and have'nt looked back. you can get some high breaking strain ,yet low diamater braid cheap enough if you hunt around the internet  . most of our reels are loaded with 30 or 50lb braid. it will just take you a session or 2 to get used to reading the bites. it's also a godsend when the mackie bashers descend in the summer. 30lb braid cuts through 15lb mono like a hot knife through butter . after a few lost mackie traces they get the message and give you a wide berth :P but investing in a finger guard would be a good idea if you want to cast a 7oz lead to the horizon, espically if your hands are wet as it will soften your skin in a rainy session. hope this helps man.

have tried it on a multiplier for beachcasting and it was a bad idea..cuts into itself and is extreamly expensive if you get a birdy! As people have said its used a lot in fixed spools for beachcasting, Bits will look bigger then what they are but you will learn to read them after a couple of sessions

I have been using 50lbs whiplash for years on my Abu 6500 and never had a problem and no need for shock leaders as the most lead I would use is 4oz you can get 300yards of 50lbs whiplash on a 6500

braid on a multi for beach fishing are you mad :lol stick with eggbeaters with braid ,using 50 lb braid is a bit over the top for normal beach fishing i would have thought?braid can also be a disaster if you are fishing in bad weather as the lack of stretch will pull out your gripper when a big wave hammers your line, saying that in calmer conditions it,s amazing stuff to use and you get a much better fight out of your catch with every headshake transmitted to the rod 8)

Braid on a multiplier, on the beach, sober? I use braid extensively, it definitely has its advantages and if used on a fixed spool with a long soft continental style rod can be brilliant for beach work. The stiff pokers we use aren't really suited to the use of braid. Yes you can use heavy braid, but this removes one of the great advantages of braid, the low test/diameter ratio. I have found that carp and light pike rods matched with braid in the 16 to 20 lb test region is excellent for beach fishing were tidal strength or weed is an issue, light one and a half and two ounce leads can be used instead of four or five ounce. Forget about it on rocky shores though. Make sure you load the reel correctly from day one, or you will spend all your time fixing kinks and twists in the line. Casting with braid is not for those who like an easy life, but it can be worth persisting with it, for the days when the fish are finicky and you outcatch mono users three or four to one.

I would use this over rough ground marks that have very strong tides and are very deep 100ft plus of water try fishing that with mono and you can forget about it. You cant even feel the bites and by the time you do the fish has you in the weeds and its gone. I have seem this happen lots of times with my mates trying to fish these marks.

Was tempted with braid few years back when found mark with a serious tide rip. But love the multiplier so went for Grauvell Teklon Gold line. Very low diameter and casts well. Not as low diameter as braid but cheaper and could still fish with multiplier.

I changed to braid on my fixed spool and find it great. You can feel the weight coming along the sea bed its so sensitive, id say lures would be very good. Still getting used to the bites, looked like a good thump the other night turned out to be a very small whiting.
