Anyone else been out ?

#1 Post by flynnboy »

Hi guys

I'm just wondering if anyone else has been out fishing recently ?

I've been out 4 or 5 times over the last couple of weeks fishing jellies on a dropshot. There is absolutley nothing doing here yet (Donegal Bay) and I haven't seen anyone else out fishing either. Does everyone else know something I don't :?:

your not no your own. i was out yesterday Clare area and nothing and i was down west the week end before and its quite down there to. the sea is very calm around here and when its like this the fish don't come in as close.but its mixed weather for this week so that might help.

Trip on saturday:
I have started on the Quality Hotel Beach near Youghal, strong west wind was blowing, big waves, nearly no chance to cast out. After 2 hours of nothing i went to the Carpet factory in Youghal. Again nothing. some of my friends came there and we headed up to the small pier after the bridge in Youghal. Again nothing. at 5 we gone to the whiting bay, nearly lowtide, a lot of weed but not a single fish.
Finally we landed in Ballincotton with 4 friends, 8 rods and all what we catch was about 4 very small Codling and a 5 cm pouting.

Results:
2 Ling: the first about 6kg, the second about 4kg.
3 Cods: size about 2 kg each

Methode for those fishes: local fisherboat landed and i bought them.....

It´s a shame.....

I'm not the only one drawing a blank then

I wasn't quite truthful when I said I've had absolutely nothing... about 3 weeks ago I caught ONE very small Pollack... might as well have caught nothing. I took that as a good sign but..... I was obviously a little too optimistic

Your only saying that because we don't get hounds over here Danny

Hi Flynnboy: its still very early in our region unless you're after sea trout, and even then...

I'm staying on the bait for another few weeks. I keep an eye on a couple of spots where the sandeels hang out in right conditions and when I see the birds diving there, I get the lures out.

There's always an odd one taken in the dead period but very much the exception. mostly you'll only be depressing yourself with the blanks.

Hi Hugo

Last year was my first year at this. When do you reckon chances will improve up this end ? I never really get depressed about blanks because I always enjoy being out there regardless, a fish would help though........

I've been out trying the rock marks with spinners & jellyworms for the past few weeks still no sign of Pollock showing yet a blank each time :( although its usually around mid - late April before they start showing, when the small Pollock show up the big fellows are not far behind along with the Garfish & Wrasse cant wait!!

Good man on the sea trout Brian, what did you get them on?

First thing I watch for is that sandeel signal, or some bait fish activity in the rock pools that'll draw the other fish inshore from the cosy deeps. Like you say its normlly mid-April when the shallows warm up enough, but it could be well into May this year unless this arctic weather does a sudden flip. Tidal zone's a good bit cooler than usual round here.

Caught them on frozen Sandeel Hugo tried for them with spinners but no joy yet!! Hopefully the water temp will be on the rise in the next few weeks & get things rolling, cant wait to get stuck in a good 6lb + Pollock from the rocks
