Mail order bait

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Mail order bait

#1 Post by x »

Dunno if anyone has tried this site

http://www.thelincolnshirepeeler.co.uk/index2.html

but I ordered a mixed bag yesterday evening and it arrived in my Northern Ireland address at 11:30 this morning, so can't fault the shipping.

Ray is also pretty quick responding to email and is happy to accept payments via paypal.

All I have to do now is make it onto a beach over the weekend for some 'field testing'. Will hopefully have a report to post on Monday.

This lot claim to be able to post anywhere in UK/ROI so if the bait is up to scratch it might be a handy source....

Yes i tried the peeler of that guy, he sells it on e-bay..never worked but had lug too and caught nothing either, crabs ate the peeler i put on, then another guy told me it cant be real peeler if the crabs eat it, as they dont eat their own meat..

I would go along with that, hard crabs protect a peeler.if the crabs eat it, it does not sound like peeler. It could be eaten by small fish, but if you ever seen a crab hanging off the bait as you reel in (like they do) that's a sure sign.

All man-made bait is only mans theory, the only proof can be on numbers, over and over, one session does not prove good from bad. How many times have you had the perfect fresh as can be bait and come off the beach with zilch!

Just MHO.....the other stuff may be fine. but the peeler sounds a bit suspect to me.

sometimes hard backs will be hanging off peeler baits when you bring them in, normally in areas where there are a lot of them like estuaries etc

i know plenty of places that have a huge crab population and the crabs here have no problem eating there own. peeler crab baits just last longer than worms. if a fish dosen't find the bait within 10/15mins chances are the crab has been stripped by it's buddies!

As above got 5 packs and used them all and got nothing. Not sure about eating each other but would have made a change to have something eat it as nothing did. I tried over different marks so dont buy be just as good taking cash and chucking it in the sea.

crabs are scavangers of the seabed and will eat anything, especially crab meat. Crabs are not so kind kearted that they will protect any poor fellow crab who happens to be peeling. The cock crab will hold onto a hen crab which is undergoing the peeling process, not so much to protect her but so that he can mate with her as soon as she pops. Males can only mate with the females when they are a softback. when you see a 'jack and jill' pairing of crabs the top crab is always a male hardback and the bottom crab either a soft/peeler female.

Right, update time. I've caught sod all with any of the variations of these baits. I have, and this seems to be a common thread, noticed that if there are crabs in the area, they're the first thing they'll go for.

Having said that, I'm fishing over clean sand, targets are flounder, plaice, dab, whiting etc.

Since cod are pretty scarce where I'm usually fishing, maybe these baits are the biz for them - they're just not about to take my offerings.

A neat idea, just don't work for me but was worth a try.

YEP, I tried those same baits on a few trips and never even got a bite, when i still caught on other baits that i normally use. Will not try them again.

PS I also bought preserved sandeel on ebay and it never done me any good either, stick to the frozen, it works far better.

does anyone work with any of the farmed worms - from seabait or dragon baits in wales? used it at the home nations and was quite impressed with its quality, just wondered if anyone bothered to get it sent over here.....
