Sea Trout Popper?

#1 Post by Bombax »

Just have a general question.......

Will a sea trout hit a surface popper in the same way as a bass does?

My normal mark throws up a combination of both bass and trout. I like fishing poppers for the visual buzz but would like to still catch both species (as a Toby does).

Always Hedge your bets both ways

Any ideas would be much appreciated, i know they hit wake fly's at night in rivers?? So??

Easy now..

Bloody good question Bombax, and one I mean to experiment with this year.

I've been told that Sea Trout won't go for a SP like Bass will, but I won't be happy till I've spent hours of angling time finding out for myself. :D

I've had a sea trout attack a tacklehouse feed popper before im not sure if it was just jumping and hit the popper out of coincidence but he did knock the popper about a foot in the air, sadly it didnt hook up tho

BB

having spent thousands of hours watching people fish poppers/walkers for bass where I know seatrout are also present - I have never seen one landed on bass tackle - that of course doesnt mean you cant catch them......it just means several other things that you or I can speculate about - I have caught them on a 'battery fly' (surface) but then again why?

So with a different popper/walker - colour/shape/sound/presentation/timing etc who knows - I bet it would be cool though -I have caught the following on surface lures in Ireland - GHB, Bass, Launce, Mackerel, Pollack, Shad, Wrasse, Mullet (suspect accidental), Brown trout, Pike, and Perch,

Very impressive Jim,

Any detail on the GHB catch on a popper. Would love to hear what it was caught on and how the fight was like :?:

Have had similar experience several times. Is it something to do with hook size on bass poppers Jim? The trout have much smaller mouths.
