Beaches & Reefs, Kerry, 12th & 13th March 2010

#1 Post by John D »

People:Me, my brother Greg and our guide John

Duration: An hour or so for each session

Tide: At various stages

Weather: Not much of a breeze during any session. Fairly mild. Dry. Clear and calm seas most of the time. On our night session there was a good surf rolling.

Bait: Soft plastics, jointed plugs, surface poppers, bits of frozen fish and fresh lugworm.

Rigs: Spinning gear was 10lb braid with a light mono leader. Bait fishing was also with braid. The rigs were simple Pennel rigs with a size 4/0 below a much smaller sized hook. We used 4oz grip leads. For mullet fishing we also used a very simple setup. A clear bubble float half filled with water was tied directly to the line with a size 6 hook tied to the end of the line about 8 inches below the float.

Results:Me -> 4 bass. My brother Greg -> 3 bass. Our guide John -> well of course he caught 9 bass :|

Report:All of the lure fishing was done during the day but produced no fish. The mullet fishing was done just before dark. This proved very frustrating. The atmosphere and environment meant we couldn't get the mullet feeding properly for a long time. Just as the mullet started to feed heavily on our feed we lost the last bit of light and had to head back to our base. Our night session produced the bass.

Excellent fishing lads,it's great to see some bass being caught, there hasn't been that many bass been reported over the past few weeks.
That could be for two reasons, either there isn't that many being caught or those who are catching them are keeping it quiet.
Well done, great pictures too

Nice fishing, especially for March. Did you get any of the fish on lures or was bait the best method?

Bait was the best method. Lures didn't produce anything, not even a follow!

Well done boys. Nice to see you land some bass this early in the season.

Too bad, you didn't get a mullet. The mullet are tricky little buggers, but John's seaweed-method surely get's them on the feed. (some days, I can still smell that stuff  )
