Sligo Estuary 06/03/10

#1 Post by SHANE R »

People:me

Duration: 11am to 1.30pm

Tide: Falling

Weather: Lovely

Bait: Sandeel

Results: Sea trout

Report:I decided it was about time I added a Seatrout to my species list for the year so I headed to a spot at the top of the Ballisodare estuary that is known to produce the odd trout. I had only a rod, a reel, a pack of hooks, a pack of swivels and sandeels, it makes a huge change from lugging a seatbox, tripod and 4 rods. I set up with a freelined sandeel which I allowed the strong tide rip to carry along. There was nothing for the first hour and I entertained myself watching a family of seals on a sandbank. Then I got a hit as I retrived slowly but I made a fatal mistaken, I struck into the fish, I should have given it line to run and then hit it. I was switched on now and fished hard for the next hour. I hooked and lost another fish about three yards out. About ten minutes later I finally landed one when I moved out into the current from the waters edge, he gave me a crackin fight on braid using the tide to try and escape. He only weighed a bout a pound but fought like he was five pound. I got another 2 hits and managed to land one more fish of about the same size. I fished for another 15 mins and called it a day . It was a cracking short session and it's really got me thinking about fishing a bit lighter and being a bit more mobile.

Cheers
Shane
