lough foyle Donegal side 2-3-2010/two short sessions

#1 Post by fishermannum1 »

People 1st sesh' myself/ sec' ses' with a mate

Duration 1 1/2 hours each session

Tide riseing

Weather fine but very cold

Bait sprats

Rigs running lead

Results 1st sesh' 5 seatrout, second sesh' me 3 trout the mate 1 trout

Report decided to have a brake from the big rods so dug out one of my spinning rods and reels (ugly stick an Michell 300A) had it loaded with 10lb braid so it was just right for the trip out. so a small tackle box in the pocket and a flask of sprats and that was me on the road. when i got to my mark the tide was rising ok but it was still to far out, so i drove on to another one of my marks. seamed a bit better here so got myself set up and sent out the first cast (sprat) it was only out about two minutes and the top eye of the rod nearly hit the water, by the time i grabbed the rod it had the sprat striped off and it was gone  so on the next cast i kept my hand resting on the rod, a few minute later and the rod doubled over again and i lifted into it, 8) first fish on, got a magic scrap out of it, it was more times up in the air than it was in the water 8) 8) it hit the scales at 1lb 6oz. after that i missed about 1/2 a doz; was just to slow on the strike, then in the last half hour i got four in my last four casts, best was just over 2lb 8) 8) 8) then home for the spud's
second session
later in the day me and the mate went to the first mark that i went to early on, and the tide was just right. so baits went out and again it wasn't long before we we were getting good solid thumps on the rods, the mate landed a nice fish of around 1lb(forgot to bring the scales on this session) then it was my turn and i got three in the space of half an hour 8) i missed a few more and the mate was getting all flustered    he was getting crackers of takes but he could not connect with them   and yes the slagging began    the mate has a few pic's on his phone, when i can get the git out of his bed i'll get them off him...

i know what you mean scrob for the lough is vast, but I've been fishing this place for over 40 years now, and know the right places and most importantly the right stage of the tides to fish.

Well done Don, you did brilliant. 8)
I'm gonna give the seatrout a go myself soon, I haven't decided whether to use the bait for them (sandeels) or the spinner , I'll see. Your method worked well, so I might try something similar and see how I get on and if that doesn't work I'll try something else.
Sounds like they give you a really good fight, you must have enjoyed it :D

your right in what your saying johnfish, and i do catch a lot of spent fish (kelts) at these marks, and they are ALL released unharmed, but there is also fresh trout running up the lough at this time of the year, all trout got on these two sessions were fresh healthy plump fish straight in on the tide and were covered in sea lice. my main target species has always been sea trout, and with 40years+ experience behind me i reckon i can tell the difference between a spent fish and a fresh one...
