Waterfoot Pier, Co Antrim 20/02/10

#1 Post by scrob »

People: Myself and my housemate Jason

Duration: 7pm-12am

Tide: Last few hours into low tide

Weather: ABSOLUTELY FECKIN BALTIC!!!!

Bait: Mack, Squid, Lug

Rigs: Pennel

Results: 17 whiting, 3 codling

Report:

Well after tirelessly looking to dig or buy some worm all afternoon, I gave up and set off for Waterfoot with frozen mack and squid. We had actually intended to fish Waterfoot beach, but when we got there it was around minus 3 and blustery, so decided that the pier might shield us a bit from the elements :| So up to the pier and rods were in the water for around 7pm.

Immediately the rods were both nodding and the bait was barely in the water, I returned a small whiting on the first cast and this set the pace for the rest of the evening. All 3 rods were nodding almost non-stop for the full 5 hours, the bait would barely hit the bottom and the rod would be away, we actually spent quite some time with the tip dangled over the edge of the pier and striking into the fish with rod in hand, was good fun but just a pity we couldn't get into any bigger fish! I managed 3 codling but they were small, up to about 20cm. All whiting were in the 10-20cm range.

Still, not a bad start to 2010!

On a side note.. a couple of anglers arrived down with us shortly before we left and dropped off two enormous wraps of lug  Biggest bloody worms I've ever seen too. Much of a surprise and many thanks - that's me sorted for some flattie fishing tomorrow, anyone any pointers on where to go? ;)

Glad you got some fish mate even if they were small. Me and a mate fished the jetty at Dalriada and got zip. Had quite a few bites but never hooked a thing. We drove past the pier at Waterfoot about 3 and it looked pretty busy. Have heard that there are plenty of flounder from the beach at the river end in Waterfoot. On a side note, we had 2 boat loads of Poles up and down in front of us up to about 8 last night. Didn't look like they were getting much either but they've started nice and early this year.

at least you were all getting a few scrob :P sometimes you just have to make a trade off aginst worse weather, but better fishing  . if the wind is blowing from right to left across the beach you can usually get a bit of shelter up at the wee square flat roofed house end

if you dont use all the lug , nick their heads, squeeze out the guts, set them out on newspaper, roll them up and freeze them, good standby bait if you have problems for worms again..
Not the BigPhil from Irish Angler mag, I'm the original, i swear!!!!
