West Cork Beach, 13/02/2010

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me and Nik

Duration: 17:00 - 22:00

Tide: HW 17:25

Weather: calm and suprisingly warm in the sun, cool when it left

Bait: lug and mackerel

Rigs: pulleys and flappers

Results: Nik -41cm bass and a whiting : me 2 50cm bass and 2 5 bearded rockling

Report: not been fishing much recently. Anytime, I have been it's been lots of small codling (with the odd coalie or whiting for good measure). Decided it was time for a bass, so after a fishless trip early in the week, we headed to the old faithful.
Lovely, evening, but not a tap on any of our rods until about mid tide when Nik's rod started banging. Was only just in the water with the dropping tide, but didn't stop him reeling in his first bass of the year. It must have been crawling on the sand to get his lug!
Not to be outdone and now knowing they were in close, I rebaited and was rewarded within 10 minutes with a fine fat bass at around 50cm. Was in great condition, obviously been feeding well. We were both delighted - mission accomplished.
Nik then reeled in the whiting, followed a cast or so later by me with another bass which was almost identical to the first in size and condition.
Few small bites then afterwards for Nik, with me landing a couple of five beards.
Headed home well pleased with our evening.

Where else? The bait bandit fox was there as per usual. Earliest I've had a bass there before was end of March, so we were there more in speculation although heard of bass being caught West and East of there, so we figured why not....

Well done Lee.
Nik sent me a picture not too long after he caught his just as i was up to my elbows in nappies and baby powder and to say i was jealous is an understatment. Hopefully its a sign of a good year for the bass.

 - yes we sent a couple of pictures to those less fortunate than ourselves on that day - just so you can relive the agony here's Nik's bass
