waterfoot beach co. antrim FLATTIE BASHING! 13/02/10

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and jordan

Duration: 6pm to 3am

Tide: HW 10.50pm

Weather: dry, flat calm and mild

Bait: rag, lug, mack, squid and sand eel

Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Results: ME: 9 flounder, 2 coalies, 2 5 bearded rockling and 3 whiting. JORDAN: 14 flounder, 2 coalies and 2 whiting

Report: i went up to the beach on thursday night to scout it out to see if it was worth fishing at the weekend and i got a good dose of flatties :P :P . so we decided it would be worth a go and a flattie bashing session was on the cards :D :D :D . we left belfast at lunch time as we wanted to give one of our summer rock marks a go to see if there were any wrasse showing yet. sadly i have to report we spent 3 hours at blackhead below the lighthouse with only 1 bite between us for the entire session    . but it's a nice walk to get to the mark so it was'nt a total waste :) . by the time we were set up on the beach at waterfoot it was almost 6pm and the tide was flooding. so we cast a rod out at distance each and one in close and waited for the bites to begin. we did'nt have to wait too long as i was first into a fish and a nice flounder was landed, photographed and released :P . then jordan upstaged me by getting a nice brace of flounder, followed by a full house of flounder, whiting and coalie    . the bites were coming thick and fast, but a lot of tiny fish were just robbing the bait of the hooks. but we had promised to stick to our plan and not go down below a size 1 hook on any of our rigs tonight. we were missing a lot of the smaller stuff, but we were getting some above average sized flounder for a change :P :P :P :P . that was pretty much the way the rest of the session went for the rest of the evening. mainly flounder with the odd coalie or whiting thrown in for good measure. i managed 2 five bearded rockling, which was a bit of a bonus :P , but no sign of the wee plaice i got here on thursday :? :? :? . i could only put it down to the fact that all our worm baits were fresh, but on thursday all i had was some seriously manky lug that was humming    . jordan was getting a few doubles and that one treble, so he was made up how the session went. near the end 2 other lads came over from the peir to see how we were getting on as they had spotted our lights in the distance. they told us that the peir was fishing pretty slow with only tiddlers showing up, so our decision to stay on the beach payed off in the end    . all in all a great wee session with plenty to keep us busy and our first flattie bashing session of 2010 was a good'n :D :D :D

good session fellas and some nice plump flatties there indeed! :D ...i must try the beach out

Me and the mate fished waterfoot pier from 9pm-3am on Friday night, mostly small whiting/coalies/codling up to 20-25cm, a few small flounder, and i touched for 1 decent codling about 1.5 lb but just a bit short of keeper size, decent session though for such a flat calm sea.

cheers barry. was the same on saturday, not a ripple in red bay. the place looked like a pond   . that's not a bad sized codling either :P just a pity so many codling under a pound were wiped out there during the summer   we watched 6 guys fill a tesco carrier bag each with them there at the end of the summer when there was agood run of them from the pier    seen it happen so often there it sickened us :x :x :x
