ME AND THE BROTHER , FISHED FROM 5PM UNTIL 10 PM , TIDE IN FULL AROUND 7.45PM . BAITS WHERE JUST SANDEEL , LUG , AND MACK . RESULTS MYSELF A SINGLE TINY PLAICE . THE BROTHER CAUGHT FOUR PLAICE AND THREE COALIES . LOVELY EVENING TIDE VERY FLAT , I WAS`NT FEELING TO CONFIDENT AS WE WHERE AT A LOCAL BEACH I`VE NEVER HEARD REPORTS OF FISHING BEING DONE ON . THE FOUR PLAICE THE BROTHER GOT WHERE ALL OVER THE POUND MARK , ONE WAS 1 AND A QUARTER , TWO CAME IN AT 1 AND A HALF , AND THE BIGGEST WAS JUST SHY OF THE 2 POUND MARK , HE HAD A BALL , ALL I HEARD OVER THE WALKIE TALKIE WAS "COME AND GET A LESSON FROM THE MASTER ". w***ER .

Nice size to the flats, you sure they were'nt flounder though ?

Why would you ask that

It seems the plaice is a much misidentified fish especially out west, I'm not fishing too long myself and have always been told plaice are a summer species, maybe its different over there, thats why I asked.........to further my angling knowledge

I wasnt trying to insult the OP, just clarify really...........as I stated its a fine haul of flats eitherway

So people on the west side of the country aren't as good at telling the difference between plaice and flounder as people on the East? Is there any science behind that, or is it just a generalism?

A few people in the south arn't too good at distinguishing them either.
Last year I was fishing an East Cork beach. When I arrived an angler was already there. I asked him how he was getting on and he said he had caught 3 plaice. I was surprised at that as it is a beach I fish regularly and have had plenty of flounder but never a plaice. About half an hour later I had a bite an reeled in a good size flounder, sandy coloured with those orange spots flounder on sandy beaches often display - the guy came over and said "that's a nice plaice" - I told him it was a flounder but couldn't convinence him - he was certain it was a plaice

Yes Lad,

I have mistaken flounder for Plaice but the Lads on here put me wise,

Flounder can have the orange spots, So to tell the difference between them it’s a simple case of rubbing ones finger up the spine from the tail and if it feels rough and bumpy it’s a Flounder,

On a Plaice it will be smooth until you get over the eye area where you will feel 3 little bumps,

A Dab’s body will feel like sandpaper when rubbed toward the head,

flounder/plaice- both are tasty boko.

There is nothing worse than a mate catching more than you. Actualy there is when they take the time to gloat about it.

Loads of guys call flounder plaice on Inch and all over Kerry, they will not be told they are flounder either. As for plaice being the only flat fish which has orange spots, they are not, as had been said flounder display them also. I have seen flounder well up rivers having orange spots. When someone see a flat fish with orange spots they just assume they are plaice, they never look that hard at them to see they are nothing other than flounder.

The flounder has got an almost straight lateral line and the place has a dip in it's, see the pics.

the chances of actually catching a plaice this time of year especially a mature specimen of 2lb is remote. there busy off spawning and wont be back until march at the earliest. it is most likley your plaice is a flounder.

I still stand by my initial response, . Without a photo for proof you, me nor anyone else, will not know 100% whether it was a plaice or a flounder, so it was a pointless question, you were basically calling boko stupid or a liar.
As for the argument that its unlikely based on the species spawning habits, I seem to remember a 9lb Pollack being caught and photo'd on this sight from a Donegal Pier last Dec/Jan which I would have also said was pretty unlikely.
A simple 'well done, good to get out' would have done fine!
