People:

Me and Robo

Duration:

19th Sept

Tide:

3hr before HT and 1 hr into ebb

Weather:

Overcast and bit of a blow from SW (I think)

Bait:

Sand Eel

Rigs:

Float Rig

Results:

Mackerel and 7 bass from 3-12lb.

Report:

What a session. Having spent 15hrs travelling from London to Timoleague we decided sleeping was for wimps and got straight into bait digging and fished the first flood we arrived.
Bites started around 2hrs before HT and most of the bass were caught within a 1hr window. 3 large bass were also lost with a hook pull at the net from a fish EST around 8-10lb.
We caught throughout the week but this was the best session by far.

Great stuff, Jonathan :D

How was the weed? - it was pretty bad at high tide back in August. Were you fishing from a boat or off the shore?

The weed meant float fishing was the only real option within the estuary when the tide was running as anything fixed to the bottom would quickly resemble a clothes line. It also helped avoid crabs stripping baits.
Trotting baits in the current only picked up weed when reeling in for a recast. Fish were caught no more than 20ft out so distance wasn't a problem.
On a different day when fishing start of flood we hooked a nice bass in only 2ft of water no more than a rod length from the bank. It's tail was out of the water and it looked like it was turning rocks for food. small bullet lead trundling along the bottom did the job. Magic!!!

Lads, take it down a tone. The last thing we need is any fool with a rod coming down and cleaning everything out. I've already spotted anglers this year with undersize fish.

Conger, I understand your concerns but it's a big estuary mate and I didn't say where they were caught from. The big fish were only in for a small window and fishing wasn't exactly easy for rest of week so I doubt you will be getting anyone with ideas of clearing the place out as Xavier has raised with failed effort in Timoleague. If you are worried about idiots taking fish I am a bit confused with your response to Xavier's catch report as you said loads have been taken all year? You'll be pleased to know all our fish were returned and anyone with undersized bass should be given a bollocking!
