Cobh, The Old Custom House, Fri 22cnd Jan

#1 Post by Pat »

People:Me

Duration:18:30pm - 21:45pm

Tide:HT 21:42pm (3.7m)

Weather: N5 – NW7mph, clear and settled, 4.5C

Bait:Crab

Rigs:2 Hk Pat, Pulley

Results: 21 codling (25 - 37cm)

Report: After reading JP's impressive report I was a bit sheepish about putting this up. On Friday I headed as close to an old mark as I could get. This spot is now closed off on health and safety grounds as it has been derelict for a few years. I set up just adjacent to it. This spot was renowned for producing good cod many moons ago. I know of one local angler who has had a 17lb cod from here.

As I have in all my sessions this week I set up just one rod. I started off with a two hook pat and baited up with crab. A fairly good cast is also required here so I fairly belted it out. I didn't have to wait too long for the bites to start and within the first twenty minutes I had three fish, and then for the next hour after that it was none stop action. The fish tonight were much better than the last few sessions. Most fish were over the 30cm mark with the best going 37cm. As has been the case the last few nights, these fish were also coughing up digested fish about finger size. Then one coughed up an undigested half of a fish. I've put up a pic below; looks like a poor cod to me :?: .

Another great session tonight....I'm enjoying this lately. Again there is plenty of fish about. Nothing massive, but still great fish to get. Shamelessly, I'm going to get another plug in here  ....you should book a place in Cobh SAC's Light Line Comp (No. 2) on Sun 14th Feb and have a crack off this cod fishing. Its great value at €40  !

Well done Mike!!! It is from a boat and is fished within the confines of Cork Harbour. We used two charter boats the last day, the John Boy and the Noamh Carta. Both are very comfortable boats and can take 8 anglers each.

PM your details, mobile phone number, etc.,... and I'll book you in with the Club Secretary.

In case you haven't seen it already, here's a report of how we got on the last day http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bull ... =5&t=25508

There were 142 fish caught, which made it an average of 8 fish per angler. There were 35 codling caught upto 45 cms. Yours truly had 9 of them :D .

I thought it was a whiting myself first, but with the eye so far to the front it made me think that it may be more a poor cod or pouting. Its hard to say really without the full body. Maybe some of the species ID experts like Donal Domeney or Eric might give us their opinion.

Gee, man, you couldn't expect me to give a prime mark away on a public forum  . Now, if you were to fish our next Light Line Comp on Sun 14th Feb....well that would be a different matter  .
