WicklowHarbour 24-01-10

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:Me, Ivan (Rodbender), Neil,(Fishface)

Duration:4-30pm-10pm

Tide:high about 5-30pm???

Weather:nice, calm, not too cold

Bait:lug, mack ,squid, wraps

Rigs:2 hook flappers and 1 hook clipped down

Results:Dabs, whiting, codling, coalies, doggies , short spined sea scorpion, poor cod

Report:After reading a message from Ivan on the PC I gave him a buzz to see how he was faring in Kilcoole. Nothing much doing was the answer so I suggested heading to Wicklow Harbour to try and salvage something from the trip. "Everybodys struggling at the moment for fish",,at least thats what i told myself on the drive down(and what a nice drive it is, Glen of the Downs , Sugar Loaf etc, especially with the M50 nearly completed. I arrived at the Harbour to find Ivan tucking into a nice fry up in the Camper van (some people have all the luck, talk about home from home   ). I helped myself to a nice cup of tea , as the do in Coronation Street (so i'm told, i dont watch it   ) and after a nice cuppa and a chat we gathered our gear together and set off down the pier. As we turned the corner , there were only 2 other anglers down the end at the rough ground , so we went a ways down and set up. First cast had ne into a nice Dab, and one of the anglers came up to see what i'd caught and what bait i was using. Turns out they hadnt a bite the whole time they were here, so that wasnt good news  . I was off the mark , but I was more concerned that Ivan got a few fish after the long trip down from County Antrim  . Next cast i felt a few tugs on the line and reeled in a small coalie, and i was delighted when Ivan reeled one in a few minutes later,,,,,,,,,,,,,phew,,,relief at last. You can really feel the pressure when you bring someone to a new mark for them :) . The other anglers headed off, but not before handing me some of their leftover bait, thanks lads,, and me with only a small supply,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what a decent lot we anglers are,,,,,,,,,,,,mostly   . I was delighted to get a poor cod, a new species for '10, before the bites stopped and we entered a barren period. Fishface arrived and headed for the hotspot on the corner ( i let him tell Ivan about it as he's the local   ) so we moved up to where he was set up. I told Ivan that Fishface would probably cast out and get a doggie and what do ya know,,,,,,,,,,,thats exactly what happened    ,again, and again ,and again   .He had 4 or five fish, before we started to connect ourselves. Ivan started hitting into the doggies next, and eventually i managed to get one. We had some dab, whiting, codling also, and i managed a short spined sea scorpion, another new species. Bigsod (Shane) arrived with his delightful mutt and stayed for a chat. We thought that he had an accident in his trousers if you know what I mean, but it turned out that you shouldnt sit on the rope tying up thingy with a hole in the middle that everyone pees into   . At least he had soaked it all up through osmosis onto his trousers and we could now have a seat  . We ended our session about 10pm and packed up , and we said our goodbyes to Ivan who was snug as a bug in a rug in the Camper for the night. Not a bad session for January, with a few fish caught in the end, and nice meeting up with Ivan and the lads. Tight lines.

Another fine haul of fish there Dave, and well done on two new species.
Have you got a photo of the short spined sea scorpion? not sure I know how to distinguish those from the long spined sea scorpion. Are they similar apart from the length of the spines on the fins?
