west cork beach, 22-1-10

#1 Post by red »

People: just me

Duration: about 1830-2030

Tide: high about 2130ish

Weather: lovely

Bait: frozen razor and lug wraps

Rigs: 2 hook flappers, size 2

Results: 1 coalie and 4 rockling

Report:first up the fishing gods were against me, was meant to go dig some lug in the afternoon but visitors called so never got out and then i got delayed again later on so the tackle shop was shut and i couldnt get crab  so frozen lug and razor would have to do.

when i got there the surf was HUGE, i was thinkin a Bass or 2 might be around but more in hope than expectation.
i cast out a griplead and 2 mins later the rod was buckled over with weed so moved 100 yards up the beach and tried again. it came back clean so put on a trace and some bait and out it went again. as i was setting up the 2nd rod i saw little knocks but thought it might be small bits of weed so carried on and cast out. i brought in the 1st one and had a double of coalie and rockling :D doubling my species count for the year. both around the 21/22cm mark.
it went quiet then and after a while the weed caught up with me again so moved another 100 yards. 1st cast here saw another rockling come in, about the same size as the 1st one but not half as fat. got 2 more smaller rockling after another while before the weed caught up with me again so decided to call it a night.
not a great night but better than a blank and glad i got to christen my 525mag without any dreaded nests

the pics are crap as i think i got sand in the camera cos it stopped working and had to use the phone. the rockling all had 3 beards but any ideas wether their 3 beard or shore rockling??

Fairplay for picking out a few fish, that weed is a killer at times.

That rockling is a 5 beard, hard to spot the extra 2 barbs at times, you have to rub the fishies snout to get them to pop out occasionally - just make sure nobody is watching, you could get some funny looks

Well done Red, nice result for a couple of hours, the rockling looks like a 5 beard, as Mark said, the other 2 beards tend to lie flat on the snout.

You were using it in the dark? Respect..... Must be a supermag extra is it? I have one of the original 525s with uprated mags and its definitely broad daylight only. As to the fish, you're still doing 200pc better than I am this year.... :(

Well done for getting out Red, nice few hours. That weed cost me many aborted trips last year.

its a 525 mag, got it 2nd hand but think its standard as if it came from the box.
its easy when your only putting it out at a max of 40 yards, got a few very small over runs but nothin i had to go picking at.

Hmmm, even so, you still get the respect... I was considering getting a Supermag extra for night sorties, but research on various websites suggested that the original 525 mag was the best of them, so I just bought some extra magnets for a few euro instead. Makes it more manageable for somebody of my skill level (low) but I still change over to FS at sundown. Well wear for you anyway. :)

nice one with the 5 beardys man :P sometimes you gotta dry your hand first before giving their nose a rub to get the other 2 wee barbules to stick up. when their wet, they tend to stick to their face
