Hooks? Mackeral Baits

Does anyone know of a suitable hook for fishing mackeral strips and chunks, i keep getting the same problem where the bait slides to the bottom of the hook to the point where its nearly falling off. Dont say use bait elastic. Suggestions please?

you could try a pennell rig for larger strips

If you dont intend to cast very far, thread the mackerel over the eye of the hook.

Tryed that seems to be sliding as well and if you asked me bait elastic is nothing but hassle

hi all,

a method i use for lugworm on fine wire hooks is after the bait is mounted on the hook push the hook point through a piece of rubber band, trim to about 5mm long and push around the hook bend, the tiny piece of rubber band cant slide out of position so it prevents the bait from sliding around the bend of the hook. im sure this would also work with mackerel baits as long as they were not too large.

I sometimes buy a big squid from the supermarket - several mm thick, and cut into strips and freeze. It's a solid bait that will stay on the hook much like the elastic band idea, but has the advantage that it's also bait! A mackeral and squidstrip cocktail is may be better than mackeral alone.

I don't understand why you say don't say bait elastic but hooks with shank barbs will hold fish baits in place. Otherwise the hook should just be nicked throughthe top of the bait a couple of times leaving no bait on the shank and the main section of the bait fluttering in the tide.

it still seems badly presented maybe ill try rocketmans suggestion or a pennel rig

i know u said mackeral, but!

i agree with Neil...
u could try putting a strip of squid on after it? it not a bad cocktail?

elastic band should work though.

Well ill try the suggestions put to me and an normal rubber band instead of bait elastic might be the way to go i fing bait elastic time consuming and irritating to put on. Maybe im doing it wrong
