Waterford Jan 2010

#1 Post by dfella25 »

People: John Keane, Eric, Wayne (the manc) Reilly, Willy (steyrman) and myself

Duration: 12 pm till 9:30pm

Tide: rising till 6:30pm

Weather: Very windy but mild and a lot of rain later on

Bait: Lug, crab and squid

Rigs: 3/0 and 4/0 pulleys and a mixture of flappers and clip downs

Report:

Deciding that a trip to Cod Mecca was due to try and satisfy our angling ambitions early on in 2010 we had planned this trip a few weeks ago while coalie bashing. So we all met up at the first mark (Due to Eric's directional dyslexia himself and John were a bit delayed) at low tide and got set up. My brother in law to be had fihed it last week and did well so hopes were high. It turned out to be hard going though with such a strong tide our rigs were getting bashed about. The wind was bad and a few snags and poor results later we decided to give the back up mark a go. I might add I was the only here to haul out a flounder but delighted with fish number number 1 for 2010.

A short drive later we were at mark 2 and also some shelter from the wind. We had about two hours left of the rise and straight away we were into the fish. Nothing beating the 2lb mark in the codling but plenty of them. There were flats as well and the standard tiny whiting taken. We were still getting the codling on the big baits. A couple of doubles taken on the flappers though. Willy then pulls hot cups of soup out of the back of his jeep for us all and boy were we all grateful for it! Think this helped us fish on in the rain and cold for a while longer. After 8pm the fishing died off and the rain was so bad it eventually got the better of us so we called it night. I think Wayne got four species for the day so nice start for him for the year. No monsters but still a good days fishing and great craic.

Only took the one pic for the species list.

Fisherman's prayer:
God grant that I may live to fish, For another rainy day.
But when my final cast is made, I then most humbly pray.
When nestled in your landing net, As I lay peacefully asleep.
You'll smile at me and judge, That I'm "good enough to keep"!
