Cobh 13-01-2010

#1 Post by evan699 »

People: me
Time: 05.30 - 08.00 pm
Tide: Dropping
Weather: SW wind. Between 2 and 5 degrees, dry and calm with a bit of fog
Bait: Mack and sand eel
Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Result: I finished work early to try and get to the mark before the tide dropped too far. I couldn't get my hands on good peeler or any worm so i picked up a few packs of mack and sand eel and decided to target a few big whiting. I fished one rod. The bites started after 5 minutes and i landed my first fish of the year, a 30cm whiting. I got another of about 25cm soon after. It went quiet for about half an hour and then the codling arrived. They were more than happy to swallow up the mack and sand eel coctails. I managed to land 5 even with a seal sitting right under my feet. The best fish weighed 1lb 2oz. Not the best night but i enjoyed getting out for a few casts anyway. I managed one more whiting before i packed up and headed for a pint. And i'll upload a few picture too cause i know how all the foreign anglers on this site love seeing photos of undersized fish.
Tight lines,
Evan

Sometimes you can do well on other baits - I once had 89 codling on mackeral off the Pier Head in Cobh over a 5 hour session.

All the fish that i caught there last night were pretty slim so i reckon they would have eagerly taken any bait that was put in front of them. I was surprised that they were feeding so well after all the rain that fell in the last few days.

What can happen is that the fresh water pushes the ones that have been further up the river down.

There was alot of rain though so i thought they'd be out more towards the harbour mouth or further. I was expecting a few big whiting though as that spot is usually plagued with them.

Well all those little fellas went back in alive and kickin after a photo but i think the seal got a hold of one of them. I'd say there's a few left around the place.
